I hate cigarettes!!
Someone is smoking outside my apartment window and the wind is carrying it in. Bastard likes smoking so much he could at least go in his own apartment and do it. Guess he doesn't want his own place to smell like that, just everybody else's.

I'm on the third floor. You can't get away from the damn things. One cigarette makes everyone else have to be a smoker. People complain about Walmart as a corporation, but at least the whole damn industry isn't built on choking the life out of anyone within 100 yards of one of their customers.

Sorry. Rant over.

12. I real-cough when I walk by
I try not to, but if I'm stuck walking behind someone who's smoking for more than a few seconds (or in whatever direction the smoke is blowing), my lungs start lurching. Same thing with strong perfume. People always give me dirty looks like I'm faking it. That's their problem.

15. No, I glare.
There's a smoking area right outside my daughter's pediatrician's office. Nothing better than taking a kid with a sore throat and a REAL cough past smokers.

I've thought of carrying an aresol can and spraying it at them, but I'd probably go to jail, even though they are doing the same thing and wouldn't be sent to jail for it.

50. Well, that would be because they are doing something legal
and spraying a can at them would probably be considered an assault, though a really mild one.

The difference is also that they aren't smoking AT you. They're just smoking.

Do you react the same to tokers.

Hit right at the heart of the matter, didn't it? I'll bet your a tough debater, with that sharp wit and perceptive comeback skill you got going there. Wow. Now that I think about it, it wasn't the smoking. I just felt unhappy that I had nothing to "bitch" about and so I looked around for something. Hmm. No parents letting their kids scream. No dead, rotting deer carcasses outside my window. No hurricanes have wiped out the infrastructure of my neighborhood so I can't "bitch" about FEMA. Wow, I'd feel so much better if I could just find some innocent little thing to "bitch" about.

Ah, a smoker! Now I can be happy!

That's exactly how it happened. You are brilliant! Now we just need to convince science that whining and not smoking is really the problem, and we can save all that medical expense.

Not diesels, not car exhaust, not grilling. Maybe dead skunks, but I don't like them, either.

I grew up with three heavy smokers back before we knew it wasn't good to smoke in closed spaces like cars on 18 hour trips.

I tend to get bronchitis a whole lot and I think that is why.

Well maybe if their windows are down and your windows are down, you might catch a whiff of it as one car passes the other one. For a brief moment.

Otherwise, you're psychic! Congratulations! Maybe you could help us track down Osama, what with that geat extrasensory perception you've got there!

One is the expected and regulated byproduct of transportation. The other is the stinky disgusting byproduct of some other persons poor decision making and lack of self control.

And yes - we CAN smell it. Smokers often can't smell a damn thing, but the rest of us with healthy olfactory systems and lungs recoil and cough at the stench and invasion.

"The other is the stinky disgusting byproduct of some other persons poor decision making and lack of self control." -- To all those people I say get out of your car and ride a bike. Your poor decisions about transport are fouling the air for the rest of us. We can hardly enjoy our cigarettes with all those auto fumes around.

79. I just quit a little over 3 months ago..
It's amazing how different smoking and smokers are when you dont smoke. The other day I was at the grocery store and the checker reeked of smoke. It almost made me nauseous. When I smoked, I would have never even noticed the smell of the checker. Now, I just cant believe I smelled that way. I had no idea. I mean, I always knew I smelled of smoke, but I didnt realized how strong and stale and acrid it was to others.

When I stopped smoking, the first thing that happened was that my nose started doing weird shit. I got scabs on the inside of it and they kept peeling off, probably 3- layers of skin. Each time I could smell more and more. Now, I marvel at all the new smells that surround me. I appreciate the fall in a whole different way :)

I guess my point is, that when you smoke you really dont have any idea of how horrible it really does smell. It isnt just that you are inconsiderate.

I smoke too much to even notice the smell of other people's cigarettes.

Smoking reduces immune function.
If you're a smoker, you are at 4 times normal risk of pneumococcal pneumonia (even after controlling for factors like education/economic status/etc.), if you're a non-smoker who lives with a smoker, you're at 2 times the normal risk.

And dig this - eleveated risk is still detectable up to 14 years after quitting.

And it's not just lung infections - it's everything from gum infections to herpes.

Just thought you might like to know.

She quit and then all of a sudden she was "smoking a little bit". Now its full speed ahead. Person lives in a high altitude. They told her to stop or it will be an oxygen tank to pull around soon for her and she is now 48 years old!

You CAN quit! I know of people that have succesfully quit after years of heavy smoking. The addiction to tobacco is harder to kick than alcohol some say.

5. One thing I've noticed
The LESS you are around cigarettes and cigarette smokers, the MORE sensitive you are to it. I don't think cigarette smokers realize how repulsive cigarette smoke is - especially stale cigarette smoker - to non smokers. Thirty years ago when we were around it all the time (in offices, busses, planes, etc) non smokers were probably pretty used to it.

You are on the THIRD FLOOR of an aparment building. Someone is standing outside on the ground smoking a cigarette. And it bothers you so much you find a need to post a new thread in GD about it?!?!

By the way, maybe he smokes OUTSIDE because us smokers are trained to do so these days? Generally, you can't smoke anywhere BUT outside! And maybe his lease doesn't allow him to smoke in his own apartment. Or maybe he lives with a wife and or kids, or at least with someone. And you guys have everyone convinced that smoking indoors gives people second-hand smoke to the extent that it is virtually equivalent to murder! So we smoke outside. No big surprise there.

And HOW LONG is he going to take to smoke that cigarette? 5 minutes? 10 minutes TOPS? Uh, maybe you could CLOSE THE WINDOW in you apartment through which his evil smoke crawls the 15 or 20 feet up to your THIRD FLOOR until he's done, if it bothers you so much?

PLEASE don't tell me that your windows are ALREADY closed, and you can smell it anyway, that the smoke works its evil way in somehow. Please don't.

78. You do, pal
What is it about smokers and denial? Geeze, at least alcoholics admit that drinking is a problem, even if they claim it's a problem they don't have.

Do smokers have any clue how powerful that smell is? When people cough, do you assume it's fake? You believe all the corporate reports that smoking and second hand smoke is safe? You think that everyone telling you how overpowering the stench of cigarette smoke is is just making it up because THEY have issues?

I need to close my windows because someone else wants to pollute the air with toxins for a while. Bush would love your logic. Hell, you've just found the solution to our whole industrial pollution problem. Everybody close their windows. No more smog days. No more expensive air cleaning systems. No more concern with global warming. Roll up your windows.

He smokes several times an hour. But it should be my problem, not his.

Make it illegal. Until then, please let it go. I go out of my way to be courteous, but it's never, NEVER, enough.

69. Agreed. But I kill them with kindness.
When I was in college I was on a bench outside, smoking and this girl walked up and sat on the bench next to mine (I was there smoking first). She looked at me smoking, made this face, and muttered "oh god" in an exhasperated tone. I knew exactly what she was getting at, but I smiled and said in my most polite tone, "I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you." She blushed and said, "Oh I just hate cigarette smoke," realizing her smart ass comment had been overheard. I smiled again and said "That's ok, I'll move." and I got up and walked further down the building (where there were no benches) and sat on the ground on the sidewalk leaning against the building.

I mean, who cares that I was there first. I was apparently the rude one.

When I smoked, I never smoked around children. I dont care if their parent was smoking around them. When we went to protest rallies or public events I was always very careful to go to the side and down wind.

If the quarters were too close, I simply didnt smoke. I think there should be more courtesy on both sides of the aisle of this issue.

77. Perfume
Now that's offensive! Well some perfumes anyhow. And people who bathe in the stuff, give smokers like me (and non-smokers) a terrible headache, sore throat, nausea. But I'm not suggesting we make perfume illegal or ban people from wearing it. In fact I consider myself pretty lucky if all I have to complain about in my personal life (today)is a whiff of nasty perfume, or in your case ciggarette smoke.

You know what would be worse?..... Being addicted to the stuff! Just be happy it's not you, because I can pretty much guarantee that the person paying $4.50/$5 a pack for those cigs. would much rather feel strong enough to quit and people like me and millions of others really don't need people like you and your uppity attitude, Mr. (or Mrs) 3 floor apartment, treating us like we're crap! All it does is piss us off! And when we get pissed we CHAIN SMOKE! So if you really want to help......be nice to the next smoker you come across, you might prolong the next cig.

42. I'm having trouble being sympathetic.
It still seems like a personal freedon issue to me. We want to retain our freedoms, unless someone is doing something we find annoying, then we get all nazi-esque.

The dude is outside. What are we going to do, ban smoking on the entire planet?

What annoyed me was when a stranger felt he can walk up to a smoking friend of mine at an open air festival and yell at her because her kid was sitting there.

52. Hatred seems to increase the sense of smell somehow.
I think the Nazis used to claim that they could smell a Jew, even from far away. I don't doubt one of them once claimed to be able to smell them in OTHER CARS tootling down the autobahn. Or standing outside their third-floor aparment.

Especially after the Fuhrer really started to drive them out of Germany / isolate them / sent them off to "resettlement camps."
Like, "When Jews were prevalent, we were used to them, but now that they are the exception, well, Jews and their fraternizers don't realize how objectionable they really are to proper Aryans!"

too bad, smokers--if you were an ex smoker like me you might hate them too. And that would be better for you and everybody.

If you don't want to live longer, just think about how much of your MONEY goes RIGHT INTO REPUBLICAN CAMPAIGN COFFERS (cough) everytime you buy from an American cigarette company.

68. Actually, from what I've seen, the tobbaco companies
Are pretty much bipartisan donators. For example, in '00, Phillip Morris gave a bit over two million dollars to both parties. It is called buying influence and hedging your bets. This is how we wind up with the two party/same corporate master system of government.

70. Me too. Ex-smoker and bank teller.
God. The stench that comes off the bills of smokers is enough to make me gag.
Money is absolutely filthy anyway, but there was nothing worse than an old, dirty smoker who brought in a bunch of money for me to count. It stinks to high heaven.

I am SO glad I was able to quit.

82. why is it I wonder?
I used to smoke too (never was into it much luckily). It really bothers me a lot now too I notice. When I go somewhere where people are allowed to smoke (like casinos) it makes me feel very sick.

My poor Mother died of lung cancer. She had quit 20 years before she was diagnosed. Oddly, the cancer was said to not be the type you get from smoking however.

Strange to say the least.

I'm glad I don't smoke anymore. It repulses me too now.

76. That happens to me all the time at my office at work
It's right downtown, on street level and I crack my window a little when it gets hot. It never fails, someone will stand right outside my office window and smoke and it comes in my office. I end up closing the window and roasting to death. You're right, there's no escape and you have my sympathy. At least I don't have this problem at home (very often).

That person has the right to smoke whenever they choose. I believe cigarettes are still legal.

Sorry for you. I smoke but I try to be as courteous as possible.
If that person lives in your complex he should go to his place and smoke although I don't smoke in my house.

You shouldn't have to close your window. My point above was--Look, cigarettes are still legal. Smokers DO have the right to smoke whenever they choose. The government has worked very hard to take away smokers' rights as much as possible. But the tobacco companies make too much money for it ever to be illegal. Sadly, I guess you're going to have to deal with the smoke.

91. Well, I'm biased...
My dad has throat cancer. One guess what it's from?
So, yeah, I'm really biased. And don't give me any of that "personal choice" shit. Nicotine is fucking addictive as hell, and he even tried to quit several times. Hell, even after he had his radiation therapy last winter for the pre-cancerous growths (that later turned into full blown cancer) he still lit one or two up a day. So, either he gets his voice box removed, or he undergoes a chemotherapy research study. And he'll probably have to get the voice box removed anyways.

And nobody can tell me that living for 18 years in the same house as him, sitting in the same room as him while he smokes is good for you (or just an "irritant".) No way. No how.
(The smoke developed a thick, layered haze that caught the setting sunlight just right as the evening went on. It was fascinating, yet unnerving to see.)
