Legal Problems Dog Bush's Inner Circle
By DONNA CASSATA, Associated Press Writer

... And what if the unthinkable happens and Cheney is indicted?

Cheney has said he is not interested in pursuing the Republican nomination for president in 2008. So Bush's choice to replace his running mate would tip the president's hand on his preference for 2008. Florida governor and first brother, Jeb Bush?

4. Isn't there a congressional approval process for a VP appointment?
I have a hard time imagining an appointment as obviously nepotistic as that would get through even the current wingnut-dominated congress. Am I naive to think so?

23. For those that believe his next step is martial law....
they will certainly believe he'd try this. It would bring on the uproar needed to "control" us. Perfect... if you look at it that way.

There is no consistency in stupidity. I don't believe he's stupid. He's consistent in not giving a flying sh** what anyone thinks. With that in mind... the repubs love Jeb, don't they? Just a bit more division for Bush's appetite, IMO. He loves it, obviously... and he's great at it too.

50. Have you not seen all the posts about Bush trying to "review" Posse
Edited on Sat Oct-22-05 03:25 PM by converted_democrat
Comitatus?? Did you read the posts about Rep. Ron Paul (R) stating that Bush is trying to push us into a police state?? Have you not read, or heard Bush's speeches where he has been asking for a "greater role" for the military on American soil? He already has the power to use them for "aid" and "support," the only power he is lacking is the power to use the military as a policing unit. So, since he is asking for "more power," and the only one he lacks is being able to use the military as a policing agent, logic tells us that is what he's after.

In the long run, it will only help us. If Jeb were to run in 08, Dems could use the Shiavo brouhaha and nepotism against him.

Additionally, it would benefit FL. I think a Dem candidate would likely win not having to run against an incumbent Repuke.

13. I thought this was interesting ...
"But one White House official, noting that Bush's senior staff is tired of the long hours and increasing pressure, has told colleagues it might be best if everyone closest to the president resign and clear the way for new blood and fresh perspectives."

This could well be the way it plays out.

And, seriously, if Rove leaves, does anyone doubt that he would still be calling the shots behind the scenes?

That may actually be good for FL since Jennings likely would lose the next gubernatorial election. FL needs a Dem gov, should help with the GE too. Maybe it's not so bad to get Jeb out of FL. That's a major swing state for us.

I remember hearing a piece on NPR about GHWB's choice of Quayle. He was said to have chosen Danny-boy because he really wanted Dubya, but an old "anti king maker law" prevented him from running with a family member. Danny-boy reminded George 1 of George 2 so strongly that he seemed like the next best thing (that according to Mrs. Quayle).

43. I doubt this for two big reasons:
Edited on Sat Oct-22-05 12:11 PM by Marr
1) It'd look terrible- especially with all the current criticism of Bush for cronyism.

2) This would *not* serve Bush's ego, and it wouldn't fit into the stagecrafted "hero" role Rove has built around him. He'd be part of a duo, rather than the Stalinesque "strong leader". It takes the spotlight off of George, and that's bad for his theatrical presentation. Dictators- even wannabee dictators- depend on theater.
