BRUSSELS (AFP) - The European Union's top enlargement official recommended that Bosnia be allowed to start talks on a stabilization agreement, a first stepping stone to joining the bloc.
The EU green light came a day after Bosnia's central parliament adopted a plan for reforming the ethnically divided police force, thus meeting a key requirement for starting the talks.
"This is positive news and will allow me to recommend to (the European Commission and EU governments) to open the negotiations on a stabilization and association agreement," enlargement commissioner Olli Rehn said.
He did not say when he thought those talks would begin, but EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said last week that he thought they could start before December 14.
