ROME - Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe’s arrival in Rome for the anniversary of the UN food agency has sparked criticism from the agency’s US ambassador and Italian officials who say his policies have helped to starve his people.

Mugabe, who is exempt from a European Union travel ban when on United Nations business, may address the Food and Agriculture Organisation on Monday during its 60th anniversary celebrations that will be attended by several heads of state. The FAO’s US Ambassador Tony Hall was personally “amazed” that Mugabe, who arrived in Italy on Saturday, had been invited, Hall’s spokeswoman told Reuters, confirming comments published in the Italian media. snip

Mugabe, a Roman Catholic, made headlines on his last visit to Rome for Pope John Paul II’s funeral when he reached across to shake Britain’s Prince Charles hand during the service.

The handshake embarrassed EU heavyweight Britain. The royal household later said the prince had been taken by surprise.
