82nd Airborne General Says Officers Not Told About Alleged Abuse
POSTED: 9:04 am EDT October 12, 2005
UPDATED: 9:04 am EDT October 12, 2005

FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- Capt. Ian Fishback's superiors have said the former 82nd Airborne Division officer never provided them with specific allegations of detainee abuse at a small camp near Fallujah, Iraq, the division's commanding general said.

"He did talk to his battalion commander philosophically about it, about detainee procedures and all of that, but as I understand it, he didn't tell his battalion commanders, 'I know of these three allegations or There are these allegations,'" Maj. Gen. Bill Caldwell told The News & Observer of Raleigh in an interview Tuesday.

Fishback also discussed detainee treatment in general terms with his company commander, Caldwell said.

"He talks to those two folks in broad terms and then takes it all the way to Congress," Caldwell said. "It's just a shame that he didn't bring it to somebody in the chain of command in some kind of written form formally making this complaint."
