New Orleans Police Beating Caught on Tape

By MARY FOSTER Associated Press Writer

October 09,2005 | NEW ORLEANS -- At least one police officer repeatedly punched a 64-year-old man accused of public intoxication, and another officer assaulted an Associated Press Television News producer as a cameraman taped the confrontations.

There will be a criminal investigation, and three New Orleans Police Department officers will be suspended Sunday, arrested and charged with simple battery, Capt. Marlon Defillo said.

"We have great concern with what we saw this morning," Defillo said after he and about a dozen other high-ranking police department officials watched the APTN footage Sunday. "It's a troubling tape, no doubt about it. ... This department will take immediate action."

The assaults come as the department, long plagued by allegations of brutality and corruption, struggles with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the resignation last month of Police Superintendent Eddie Compass. The APTN tape shows an officer hitting the man at least four times in the head Saturday night as he stood outside a bar. The suspect, Robert Davis, appeared to resist, twisting and flailing as he was dragged to the ground by four officers. Another officer then kneed Davis and punched him twice. Davis was face-down on the sidewalk with blood streaming down his arm and into the gutter.

1. nothing new here
The N.O Police have been caught brutalizing citizens for years. I recall a major news expose of this a few years ago.
This police force is widely known as one of the most corrupt in the country.

6. This is business as usual for the NOPD
A crackdown on NOPD corruption has been overdue for a long time.

3. Drunks are a pain in the ass
I don't think cops should be beating on someone, but they are just people. If they use spray, clubs, guns, stun guns or anything else they are provided with they take a load of shit for it. I think most people would just like to see no cops at all because they complain whenever a cop does their job. I bet the cops in this case asked the man to comply and he didn't. Big surprise.

11. I know what you mean, while were at lets have the military beat up anyone
who is protesting, after all protesters are a pain. You know with their signs and loud voices. UNBELIEVABLE (sarcasm)

13. Huh?
That makes no sense. You are comparing protesters to people who are intoxicated?

7. A lot of tapes were confiscated...

"Georgiev says, “We came upon a body (while driving) apparently shot by the police. While I was still driving I took a few photos through the open window and I heard an officer yell, ‘Get that camera, now!’ About a half dozen cops started running toward the car. Since the car was still in motion, and I saw them drawing and raising their guns at us and afraid they would shoot us, I slammed on the brakes.

“Before I knew it, I was thrown out of the car, the camera ripped from my hand, the other camera taken from the car, and I was on the car with my legs spread, hands up, a gun pointed in my neck. I was unable to see what was going on with Gordon. I was screaming “We are press” and I saw things from my car thrown on the ground, and the car was being frantically searched by the police.”

Georgiev told News Photographer, “As soon as they confirmed that we were accredited press they mellowed down a bit and gave my cameras back, they threw Gordon’s notebook on the ground and ordered us to get lost. After quickly picking up our stuff and getting in the car we drove away, then I realized the CF memory card from my other camera was missing – but not the one with the picture of the dead body.”
