Rabbi Banned For Supporting Evolution
OCTOBER 6, 2005 -- Can a Jew be banned for supporting evolution in the 21st Century?

The answer, shockingly, is yes.

Usually, when we think of creationism and intelligent design we think of Evangelical Christians fighting to include Bible-based teachings in America 's public schools. The vast majority of American Jews are on the other side, struggling to keep non-scientific theories out of schools.

Now a small group of ultra-Orthodox rabbis have banned the books of a young rabbi because of his arguments in favor of Darwin , sparking an angry and divisive debate.

This is why the October cover of “Moment”, the only non-partisan national Jewish magazine, shouts “Who Dares Defend Darwin?" In "The Heresy of Nosson Slifkin," “Moment” senior editor Jennie Rothenberg provides readers with a rare and powerful introduction to Jewish views on evolution. Her interviews with the banned rabbi, religious leaders, scientists and scholars—including intelligent design proponent David Berlinski—reveal the deep differences between Judaism and Christianity.

This fascinating story could only have been published in “Moment”, the nation's only truly independent Jewish magazine. “Moment” is not tied to any denomination or political institution so we can call it as we see it and include viewpoints that no other Jewish magazine dares to publish.

3. Don't the Jews know they got COHNed by the Levites early on?
That the Levites still exist today and are involved in perping the scam?

Read the Bible and learn how the Levites got the 12 tribes to support them. Burnt Offerings anyone?

Them Levites got the Hebrews to do everything while they slept, napped, gamed, etc etc. They got new clothes, the best of the crops, animals, etc from the Hebrews who were conned into it.

Where do we get the term CON?

Damn, this is still with us....

6. Levites? Cohens? Oh please...
Give me a break. Nobody but the meshuginah take this tribal crap seriously. My family is supposedly "Levite", or at least my grandfather claimed. But he could have claimed we were "Cohenim"(of the high priests), and nobody could have disputed him.

8. The ONLY time one's "tribal" affiliation has any play is in the
synagogue when the Torah is being read.
Cohanim receive the first aliya (being called up to the podium to "read" from the Torah--most often someone else reads the Hebrew while the person receiving the aliyah watches)

Levites receive the second aliyah (or first and second aliyahs if there is no Cohen present)

Yisrael (that would be the majority of Jews) receive the remaining aliyahs.

Whereas in Judaism one's Jewish status is derived from your mother (if mom is Jewish you are Jewish), one's tribal status is derived by the father.

In orthodox communities there are laws about who a Cohen can and cannot marry. Supposedly a cohen is not to marry a convert to Judaism.

9. Uh - hon?
Back away from the computer, get out in the air, and meet and talk to some real human-like Jews about Judaism, Jewish history, and who the levites/cohannim are before deciding that we need to be lectured on THE TRUTH about ourselves by some dude who's read some shit on some website.

5. #1. Evolution & Darwinism Are NOT Synonyms. #2. Qabalism Sees Evolution
as one of 22 Universal Principles. Specifically, Evolution is the Principle seen in Hebrew letter Qoph or the Corporeal Intelligence.

:)
I'm going to look for that magazine so I can read the article in hard copy. Sounds interesting. :)

7. Orthodox Judaism has taken a rightward turn in the last
20 or so years. They used to not be so literal. I know orthodox women who while wearing a long skirt will still wear pants or solid tights under the skirt, lest any part of their leg be visible to a man (and this is during the hot, humid St Louis summer).

A Reform rabbi said in a sermon that one who interprets the bible literally was seen as evil by the rabbis of yore. I wonder what happened?

I think the orthodox community has allied itself with conservative christians because of their support for Israel and vouchers (most orthodox jews send their kids to private schools). As a result of that alliance they have taken on the same issues as conservative christians.
