Just conjecture but perhaps Miers, Roberts, and Browne are all part
of the same plan. That is a total disregard for Federal Government. A desire to see it brought to it's knees.

To this end they are placing individuals that are completely incapable of doing the jobs asigned. These people are true believers that Gov is bad. They may not want to control government when they can destroy it.

4. Their arguments have been to move power to the states
Federal government they believe to be interfering. The subgroups that comprise their primary power have no use for a strong central government supporting people's rights. With a strong central system gone they can force their agendas on a weakened local governments.

5. No, just the end of government in general...
Republicans of the Reagan/Bush stripe want the end of all government, except for military and a few other basic necessities.

9. They aim to dismantle the federal government
Republicans are using the Iraq war, Katrina, and Rita to create huge debt so that they are "forced" to eliminate government programs/agencies that they consider to be "useless".

Grover Norquist has stated that the Federal Government will ONLY be:
1. Defense
2. Governmental state and local police forces
3. Court system mostly for the protection of property rights.

States will compete for citizenry, and only people who can afford the high taxes will be able live in states that offer safe water, air and food, public schooling, job safety regulations, protected wilderness and wildlife, etc.

Grover Norquist outlines the plan of reform of federal government in this interview:

6. What about stripping states of certain rights?
Like the right to assisted suicide (Oregon); medical marijuana (California); and a huge fight coming to deny states the ability to set their own standards for auto emissions/fuel consumption rates and green house gas controls in general. There is no consistent federalism here; it is highly selective.

8. Its the objectives of the two key backers
Corporations and the Religious Right. Both are continuously thwarted by a strong federal government. Both are more than ready to take on local government.

Thus while they go about destroying the federal gov they still are going to be working over the local govs in their favor.
