There are exactly two ways Bush-affiliated women are allowed to dress: in "woman of the people" suits that cost $4500 but look exactly like the clothes Wal-Mart sells, or like sluts. All of them wear a ton of makeup and none of them know how to apply it. (It would not shock me to learn that Katherine Harris has a professional makeup artist work on her every day; I've seen what she looks like when she does it herself.) All of them wear ugly jewelry. All of them probably wear cheap, hideous-smelling fragrance.

The saddest part is, except for some very notable exceptions (specifically Condi), these are attractive women.

On the other hand, NYCGirl is quite right--the fact that she can't dress is overridden by the fact that she's a Bush crony of the highest order.

The only woman in the Reagan Administration who had a sense of style was Nancy. The rest of 'em subscribed to that preppy-country club-cocktails before tennis-"Muffy Goes To Harvard" dress code. They generally fell into two categories: A-line skirts (preferably plaid), sweater sets with the obligatory pearls and chin-length "bob" haircut, OR designer suits with stock-tie blouses from Arnold Scassi, Adolfo and James Galanos (Nancy's favorite designers), prim high-heeled pumps, and that Republican helmut hairdo. The preferred hair color was blonde (think Peggy Noonan, or John Roberts' wife). As far as fragrances, Scassi and Giorgio Beverly Hills were the scents of choice (both of them so strong they could knock a moose over at twenty paces). Things didn't change much when Bush 41 got into office, either, except that nobody wanted to copy the Barbara Bush look. (Here's a little Washington insider gossip: The wearing of pantsuits by women in Daddy's Administration was *STRICTLY* verboten. Only skirts, dresses and skirted suits were permissible.

And the men? They all look like morticians. Dark suits with shirts from Brooks Brothers, accessorized with the Republican rep tie (or bow tie, a la Tucker Carlson) and sidewall college prep haircuts, or shaved heads (made fashionable by G. Gordon Liddy). Brooks Brothers for casual clothes, too. They *NEVER* deviate from the GOP uniform. Even the young men and women follow the same dress code. There's nothing more jarring than seeing a 25-year-old who looks twice his (or her) age, believe me.
