I know a Dr. Don Miers in Dallas
There isn't a finer man alive. I wonder if they are related?
Anyone know how to find out?
Btw...looking at Newsmeat, she has contributed to the DNC, Lloyd Bentsen and Al Gore in the past.

1. I just ran Harriet Miers through Lexis Nexis and didn't find
any Don Miers as a relative, although that is not to say that they might not be cousins.

I was looking for some information as to whether or not she had ever been married. Didn't find a darned thing.

12. It's weird because some of her political contributions had her listed
as Mrs.

13. There is a judge that was appointed by Perry whose name is
Elizabeth Lang-Miers, and she was affiliated with the same LLP that Harriet did.

6. well, if looks were important to the position....
you might have a point. but they're not, so you don't...other than to make us seem shallow.

10. I don't care what she looks like
that is indeed shallow. Let's look to see if she could do the job.

14. Maybe it's not so shallow to comment on her looks.
A person's appearance, unfortunate or not, often shapes their personality. We react to people based on visual clues in their face. We subconsciously assess their features and, right or wrong, we form interpretations of what kind of person she or he is based on how we process those visual clues.

Therefore, (and I'm just surmising), if she had a youth where she was treated somewhat shabbily because she's homely, it might very well affect her outlook on the world and spurred her into an ambitious direction towards the acquisition of power. That's the way some people react to how people treat them, and they live their lives according to that. It's harder for unattractive women to become successful in social settings and even in the corporate structure, and there are all sorts of studies that have been done which reflect that appearance does in fact matter. I commend her for getting ahead, I just wonder who is going to ultimately pay the price for her ambition.

Look at Rove. Honestly, if he were a mildly attractive man, do you really think he would have turned out to be so unbelievably vindictive?

She has that same weird look that Roberts does. It's rather unnerving.

22. And does the same rule apply
Edited on Mon Oct-03-05 12:18 PM by nvliberal
if that person is a liberal and a Democrat?

I think not, which only shows our hypocrisy.

We are better than that.

Besides, Miers isn't "homely," especially for somebody 60 years old.

Only shallow people who think they have to feel superior over other people judge others on their "appearance."

23. I'm not talking about rules. I'm talking about how people act in society.
My post was not meant to be judgmental toward anybody, but I can certainly say how someone's features impress me.

There is a saying that by the time you're 40, you get the face you deserve. Well, she's 60. What has she done to deserve that vapid face?

4. somewhere between '88 and '94 she switched from
contributing to Dems to contributing to Repubs...links to Bush I, maybe?

However, if she's contributed to Dems in the past...she might not be too bad...OR she might have the insanity of the converted :scared:

So what do we make of her comment that Bush is the most brilliant man she's ever met?

9. I can't say about that but...
we aren't going to get a candidate that doesn't have the goods on Bush, should we look at a candidate that Bush doesn't have the goods on?
The one thing that is bothering me though...from reading this thread, http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x1810042
it says she was appointed to the Texas Lottery Commission in 1995.
My guess is that if there is trouble, that is where we will find it.
The Lottery Commission was entrenched in scandal and there was a huge ousting in the 90's. It was ONLY voted in after promising the money would be spent on schools. That never happened. But there was high level embezzlement. Something that needs to be looked into.

19. Very odd statement
Ms. Miers said, "I believe it will be best if the Lottery has an experienced commissioner on board, rather than someone whose term expires February 2001, a person who has the time to become educated about the Lottery and is prepared to help lead this agency into the future."

:wtf: At this point she had been over the lottery for 5 years and STILL hadn't educated herself about the lottery?
Oh this doesn't sound good at all.

20. Odder yet...
snip

But she does know better than just about anyone else where the bodies are buried (relax, it's a just a metaphor...we hope) in President Bush's National Guard scandal. In fact, Bush's Texas gubenatorial campaign in 1998 (when he was starting to eye the White House) actually paid Miers $19,000 to run an internal pre-emptive probe of the potential scandal. Not long after, a since-settled lawsuit alleged that the Texas Lottery Commission -- while chaired by Bush appointee Miers -- played a role in a multi-million dollar cover-up of the scandal.

8. Did she contribute to Gore in 2000?
Of course, this could also be a clever cover carefully planned years in advance by Rove. Get her to look like a moderate when, after * is selected, he gets to insert far rightwing ideologues into SCOTUS. Am I paranoid yet?

18. Thanks.
Dr. Miers is a pediatric surgeon in Dallas. He and his wife (who is a nurse) travel to 3rd world countries to do missionary work and perform free surgery to children who need it several months out of the year.
Like I said...there isn't a finer man.
