Gibson: Why Don't Liberals Want Black People to Think About Abortion?
John Gibson
myword@foxnews.com

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,170959,00.html

I dont know know if Bill Bennett (search) still has his foot in his mouth, but it was in there pretty good after he said that thing about aborting black babies would reduce the crime rate.

Of course, aborting all babies would reduce the crime rate, and if he were trying to make a point about the absurdity of some ideas, that might have been a better way to do it.

In the firestorm of protest nobody seems to be able to remember that, as a matter of fact, Bennett is opposed to aborting any babies, black or white or brown or green.

But if you listen to Al Sharpton (search) and John Conyers (search) Friday, you'd think Bennett was in favor of aborting black babies.

He's clearly not, if his past statements count for anything, so what's this all about?

It's the biggest gotcha moment in quite a while, I'll grant you that.

And as such, it's a good way to smear Republicans and conservatives. Bennett said that. He's a conservative, therefore all conservatives think that. Gotcha.

The fact is, liberals don't want black people thinking about abortion because if black people were to give abortion much thought they might soon realize this sacred cow of the liberal agenda abortion has been very bad for African Americans.

Since Roe v. Wade made abortion legal, there have been 10 million African American abortions. That's ten million fewer black people among us that would have been here otherwise.

Now if I were a black political leader I might say to myself, "How long can I go on losing 10 million voters every 30 or so years?

If I were a concerned African American community activist I might be thinking, "Would our community have better political power, better constituent power if there were 10 million more of us?" I might wonder if the meteoric rise of the Hispanic population surging ahead of African Americans might have anything at all to do with the missing black people.

And liberals don't want black people hearing about those arguments white liberals have with white conservatives about abortion in which the white liberal eventually defends his pro-abortion position by saying, "Well, they'll just grow up poor and be criminals anyway."

This whole stink in large part may be about liberals not wanting blacks to think about abortion.

That's My Word.

Isn't that "wrong" according to Republicans? Oooh--I see. It's only WRONG if they are aborting WHITE babies. It's perfectly FINE to abort black children. What a bunch of hypocritical motherfuckers.

7. Yeah, because black women (or white women for that matter) never ever
had a coat hanger abortion and bled to death before ROE. Do these people even attempt critical thinking anymore? Gibson should be the "victim" of an extremely late term abortion, then there would be fewer helmet-headed, bile spewing, right wing fuckwads on FOX.

13. John Gibson never fails to revulse . . .
It's about the racism, stupid! You have to consider the context: Bennett was discussing Steven Levitt's Freakonomics, which has a chapter that argues that the decrease in the crime rate is linked to the abortion rate -- 30-35 years on since Roe. He makes a good argument, though I'm not an expert enough on economics, statistics, and sociology to know if he's right. What Bennett said was unconciously racist. I believe everyone is racist to one extent or another -- it's a social thing; the difference between progressives and these neocon nazis is that we try to overcome our prejudices and they refuse to admit they exist. Gibson is no different; they don't call it blind racism for nothing.

17. I'm sure every young woman facing an abortion is thinking about politics!
Or should be! :eyes:

I'm sure if I was a young woman sitting and waiting for my abortion I'm having because my boyfriend left me and I'm poor and unable to fully support, (emotionally, financially, etc. )any children, I'd suddenly change my mind if a black political leader came in and told me about how fewer black people there are because of abortion, and wouldn't our people have more power with my baby alive?

:grr:

Republicans really shouldn't try to make this better. Not happening.

19. That shit gave me WHIPLASH!
What fucking hypocrites.

NOW he wants black women to have abortions?

You know, it would really be nice if the right wing would let WOMEN decide if they want abortions, whether they're black OR white!

One of the first moves conservatives did to begin dismantling Roe back in the 1970s, was to pass the Hyde Amendment, that got rid of abortion from poor people's health plans and Medicaid.

Low income women essentially lost their right to choose many years ago because they couldn't afford any other options. They were simply stuck in their situations.

So instead of letting women spend $200-$400 of the government's money for an abortion if they wanted and needed one, the government is now stuck helping to pay for raising these kids-- who then don't get an education because of NCLB, whose mothers are barely scraping by, working 3 jobs, never get to spend time with their families, and the kids are unsupervised. Ergo, gangs, drugs, and crime.

We have a crime problem, and they and their fucking idealogy are at the root of it.

that liberals are not mad at Bennett because what he said was racist, that we are mad because he brought up the topic of abortions and black people...and we don't want them to think about abortion too much.

The fact is, liberals don't want black people thinking about abortion because if black people were to give abortion much thought they might soon realize this sacred cow of the liberal agenda abortion has been very bad for African Americans.

Basically, this man is completely warped in the head.

21. So according to Gibson,...
Edited on Fri Sep-30-05 11:01 PM by Blackwell Sucks
black people are incapable of thinking about an issue unless a white liberal suggests it to them. That is pretty much what Gibson just wrote.

The fact is, liberals don't want black people thinking about abortion because if black people were to give abortion much thought they might soon realize this sacred cow of the liberal agenda abortion has been very bad for African Americans.

27. Why do right wingers make a distinction between "liberals"
Edited on Sat Oct-01-05 12:29 AM by Raksha
and "black people"? There's a horrendously bigoted wingnut (who furiously denies being a bigot or a sexist pig although he is both) on another forum I frequent who does that ALL the time! I haven't called him on it yet, but I'm about to because it's definitely a pattern, and seeing Gibson do the same thing makes me suspect it's a pattern with all right wingers and/or bigots.

I don't know if most black people would refer themselves as "liberals" or not, but at least 80% vote Democratic so it's safe to assume that many of them would describe themselves as "liberal."

And yet in the very sentence structure of that title "Why Don't Liberals Want Black People to Think About Abortion?" there is a not-very-well-hidden implicit racism. "Liberals" is the SUBJECT of the sentence while "Black People" is the OBJECT! The structure is easier to see if you turn the question into a simple declarative sentence, i.e. "Liberals Don't Want Black People to Think About Abortion."

The first implication here is that "liberals" and "black people" are two separate groups of people, even though they could very well be the SAME people! But the second implication is even more demeaning, because there is the presumption that black people are incapable of thinking for themselves and just passively swallow whatever they are told by presumably white "limousine liberals."

I mean...how racist is THAT?

32. His comments don't make complete sense.
He's also wrong: the eventual argument about abortion is never about growing up, becoming poor and being criminals. That is a sleight on all poor people because it's kind of tarring all poor people with the same brush; that poor people are criminals (which is absurd).

How many non African-American abortions have there been?

Also, maybe we do need a proper debate about abortion. Maybe religion is to blame - some Catholic and Protestant sects are good at putting out the anti-abortion message, whereas other churches have been pushing a different message, and maybe paying 'lip service' to abortion.

However Mr. Gibson is right about one thing: Mr. Bennett completely put his foot in his mouth and left it there. But yes, we 'liberals' know Mr. Bennett's normal line is an anti-abortion one; it's just that he says a stupid comment like that and 'hidden racism' comes out in the message.

Mark.
