I heard the most unbelievably racist and disgusting things come out of the mouths of some of my co-workers when Katrina struck NO. They were so eager to believe every outlandish story of looting and violence that came out of there. They didn't even bother to hide it.

seem to believe that if they don't lynch anyone and only use the N word in private that no one will notice that they are racists. In fact, they wear their racism on their sleeves and defy anyone to point it out. At least that is the way it is down here in Texas.

8. What kills me is that they always deny it.

They'll say something like "Most black people are on welfare", but when you tell them it's racist, they almost have a brain hemorrhage. A statement like that is usually followed by "I'm not a racist, but". Lately I wonder exactly what it would take for someone to be considered a racist.

I teach in 'the hood' and I can't tell you how many times people have made insensitive remarks to me. They hear about a shooting and ask how close it was to my school. And usually it is nowhere near. When I buy a new car, they ask what kind of alarm I am getting, like I need a fortified vehicle to get to work safely. A college friend was shocked that I didn't have an unlisted phone number. She assumed that because of where I work I feared phone calls from parents. She about shit a brick when I told her I give my home phone number to all my students. At a party one time, a new acquaintance introduced me to a friend of hers and said "Tell her where you work" and then to her friend "You are never going to believe this!"

But my favorite was a high school classmate at a reunion who grabbed my arm and said "You teach WHERE?" Then she said. "Oh God, promise me you are careful going to and from work." I said "Let me get this straight. You haven't cared enough about me to send me a Christmas card in 25 years but now I am supposed to believe you worry about my safety on my daily commute to school?" I know that was rude of me but I thought she was a snob in high school and I wasn't going to let her get away with such an idiotic comment. LOL At the next reunion, she avoided me like the plague.
