I have a simple question...
How the fuck does a dude with two years of experience as a judge wind up our Supreme Court Chief Justice? I just can't reconcile it. It's absolutely insane.

Peace.

rather like appointing an intern to head of a surgery department.
Scalia was absent today. He gets no sympathy for me since he helped to create this mess.

7. I have a simple question...
How the fuck does an illiterate dude with a cocaine habit, a drinking problem, and minimal political experience (Gov. of Texas being largely ceremonial) wind up our President? I just can't reconcile it. It's absolutely insane.

I think my question answers your question.

Actual qualifications mean NOTHING to this administration
Roberts is unqualified and arrogantly gave no information on how he would rule for the next 30+ years.

Normal people are aghast, alarmed and shocked.

Kudos to the Democrats that voted against him and with our party platform, like they were elected to do.

16. Two reasons . . .
1. his age. He'll be chief justice for likely a looooong time.
2. Probably Rove is singing "under my thumb" today.

17. What's the precidence for other judges who have held this post?
Did they generally have quite a bit more? I do agree two years seems mighty thin, but my reasons for opposing him have nothing to do with how long he's been a judge.

Just another travesty of justice...

28. Touche, pitohui. . .courage to say the REAL truth. . .
additionally, Roberts has obvious physical indication that he has Graves disease. . .protruding eyes. . .OR he did and arrested the disease with radiation of the thyroid gland.

If he is now on hypothyroid maintenance drugs, he'll be a sickly SCCJ in more ways than one.

little power when it comes to majority vote? Maybe that's how things might be played by Scalia...

24. At least he didn't work for the
Arabian Horse Association.

That said, I completely agree. You don't get to be CEO of a company 2 years after you are hired. But then again, he's got more practical experience than Bush did, since the governor of Texas has very little power. I know, not exactly comforting.

29. Anyone with more time on the bench would have a record
that the Senate could look at to determine how he might treat certain cases coming up. He's a stealth candidate. Bush knows how he will vote, but there's not much of a public record that we can look at and object to.

30. At the risk of stating the obvious
Has it seemed like lots of insane things have been happening for the last five years? Like a president never rightly elected that gets chosen by the supreme court and then gets to install someone in the supreme court that helped him win the presidency? Oh I can think of a shitload of other things too.. but this irony is so bad it's beyond words.

What burns me up is that there are Democratic leaders so stupid as to believe that justice and the good old days are not gone with every bit they sell us out. We are past the looking glass. Me, I'm hoping France will invade and set us free.

33. I have no idea...
Maybe he did GWB a few "personal" favors, i dont' know. i was surprised that he would be considered for chief judge, when there were more qualified judges on the supreme court, with a lot more experience than this young fish/punk. I don't know, whe Rhenquist bought the farm, i thought for sure Scalia would get the spot, but once again, the common sense of the WH and GWB has eluded me again....sorry i can't answer the question...

34. It's slightly more common than not actually
Of 16 previous chief Justices:

5 were elevated from within SCOTUS
11 were appointed directly

Of the 11, six had zero judical experience when appointed:

John Marshall
Roger Taney
Salmon P. Chase
Morrison R. Waite
Melville W. Fuller
Earl Warren

Others:
John Jay - ? yrs NY State Supreme Court
Oliver Ellsworth - ? yrs CT State Superior Court
Willliam Howard Taft - ? yrs OH State Superior Court & Fed Appl Court
Fred M. Vinson - 5 yrs Fed Appl Court
Warren E. Burger ~13 yrs Fed Appl Court

liberal (as it turned out) CJs, become the CJ with no bench experience?? I wonder if we at DU would complain about that appointment.
