DeLay Operated Close to the Ethical Edge -- Yahoo -- vote it up

WASHINGTON -
Tom DeLay often operated close to the ethical edge in his ascension to the powerful job of House majority leader. Today, under indictment, he stands at the precipice.

The Texas Republican, relying on political prowess, arm-twisting and devotion to his GOP majority, tightened the Republican grip on the House in his seven years as Republican whip the party's No. 3 leadership post and has delivered for
President Bush in his three years as majority leader.

In the process, his brass-knuckle tactics drew the ire of Democrats, Washington lobbyists and good-government types.

The House ethics committee admonished him on three separate occasions last year and a Senate panel is pursuing his ties to Jack Abramoff, a high-powered Republican lobbyist and fundraiser under investigation for his lobbying activities on behalf of Indian tribes and his role in paying for overseas trips for DeLay. DeLay has denied knowing Abramoff paid the expenses.

DeLay consistently has dismissed the carping about ethics as just politics, but the 11-term congressman faces more than just partisanship as a Texas grand jury indicted him and two political associates on Wednesday on charges of conspiracy in a campaign finance scheme.

Pretty good article. It mentions his ties with Jack Abramoff, his usefulness to bush* and casts DeLay in a less than flattering light. Only beef I have is that IMO he went over the ethical edge, way over.
