This is a heavy repug area so perhaps if the voters stay away out here its a plus for Davis.

There was a long line, but LA county is only running about 25% of the normal number of polling stations.

I didn't vote at my usual place.

9. Just voted in Oakland
The poll was very busy much higher turnout
than last fall.

There was an anti-Arnold air to the crowd with
people very concerned about getting to vote.

I saw one couple vote provisionaly when their names
were not on the record.

I voted using the Diebold? touch screens. It was
a little hard to find Cruz in the long list that was
about 8 pages long.

I over heard an older fellow frustrated asking where
is Bustamante.

No recall Yes Bustamante No 53 No 54

26. I know it is a little late for this question
But, how do you interpret voter turnout.

Does high turnout indicate that all of the clueless people who haven't got a brain turnout because they think it would be cool for the terminator to be governer?

Or, does a high turnout mean that the dems are succesful at getting their people to the polls?

I realize that this question will probably be answered by the end of the day, but I see all the news reports about long lines at polls, etc. and I am not sure how to interpret them.

56. You had your chance in Nov. '02
to vote him out. He won fair and square. This isn't about overspending; it's about preserving the integrity of our elections. It's a right-wing power grab plain and simple. And the right-wing should share in the blame, at least, for the deficit because Pete Wilson rammed deregulation through, which allowed Enron and their ilk to game the markets. Now Pete Wilson's boys are running Arnie's campaign. Arnie also met with Ken Lay last year. If elected, Arnie will forgive Enron and toss the lawsuit. That is not acceptable. Enron and Kenny Boy must pay for what they did to us. Cruz and Davis have been trying like hell to make it so--but Arnie won't. Screw him and this bullshit recall.

No on Recall, Yes on Bustamente via absentee ballot.

I do have two (Republican) friends voting yes on the recall. One is a slavish Bush-lover who is voting for McClintock. The other hates Bush but is voting for Arnie (!!).

Most of my other friends were undecided but leaning towards No on the recall. Also at least one person at my office didn't even realize the election was today and has no plans on voting. Sad.

66. PLEASE READ: I HAD A PROBLEM VOTING

I'm going to post this question elsewhere and I don't anticipate any of you'd be in a position to provide an answer but:

I changed addresses in September and reregistered to vote at the DMV well before the deadline (9/12/2003). I received my sample ballot in the mail. This morning, I showed up at the polls and attempted to vote. I was informed that my name was not on the rolls and I would have to fill out a provisional ballot. This situation may turn out to have been a common situation as there wasn't enough time to adequately prepare for this election and many people move into California and from place to place in California each year.

On the provisional ballot envelope were boxes marked something like "registered and did not move but was not found on the rolls" and "moved and did not register". THere was NO box marked "moved and registered but was not found on the rolls." My envelope was checked for "did not register" and I was required to provide two forms of proof of where I reside. (As one of my proofs, since you could use mail addressed to yourself, I used the sample ballot which had been mailed to me.) Now it is my understanding that these provisional ballots will not be counted until the eligibility of the voter in question is verified. My question is: Do you think this will skew the exit polls and perhaps the final results? My guess is that a disproportional number of NO on the recall votes will be sealed in those provisional ballot envelopes.
These votes will eventually be counted, but my worry is that in the meantime reports as to the current status of the election might be off.

There were PLENTY of provisional ballot people, surprised to find their names not on the rolls at my polling place. In my opinion, far too many.

I was very much in the correct location. The location was the location printed on my sample ballot. It is also the location which the came up when I looked it up on the internet and the location which came up when the person working the voting complaint phones looked it up.

87. ANOTHER, BIGGER PROBLEM I DIDN'T MENTION IN MY EARLIER POST
I reported to the voting complaint people the following, which actually happened:

A woman who was filling out a provisional ballot was asked a question by a poll worker. THe woman responded that she didn't know why she was even filling out a provisional ballot as she had been registered at the same address for 9 years. The poll worker asked her if she had looked for her name on the rolls. She said that yes they had looked and she WAS on the rolls. Then the poll worker asked why she was filling out a provisional ballot and she indicated that the another poll worker had told her to. I'm not sure what happened to this woman and her ballot. I was busy filling out my own provisional ballot even though I was registered (though not, for some reason, on the rolls).

From the conversation I had with the complaint person, this appears to have been a problem for other people.

I am LIVID.
Just LIVID.

106. Here's a follow up question on your provisional ballot
Did you have to fold it to put it in the envelope? There are many reports like yours, and one report says the envelope was too small so the voter was told to fold the ballot; however, the ballot says on it "do not fold" -- this is because the optical scan machine sometimes will not read a ballot with a fold mark.

Consider logging your experience here http://www.BBVreport.org where several such reports are beginning to appear. When they all appear in the same place, the pattern becomes more evident to the press.

Also, consider supplying me privately with your contact information so I can route bona fide members of the press to you as they follow up this story.

which is "upper" Pasadena, unicorporated. Voted at about 8am, new polling place, which was pretty busy. Altadena's split by Lake st into white/repug & mixed/democrat - the mix includes a lotta afr-ams. The polling place serves the west side of things, so it looks like a good demo turnout.
On edit - shoulda mentioned, we're using punch cards, and the poll workers are reminding everyone to check for chads...

Oh, and, they had me registered in the names list book, but didn't have my address in the address book. They said I could vote there anyway.

84. Sherman Oaks voter
Voted at 7.20 AM after taking my kid to school. It was quite crowded but 3 precincts have been combined into one so it's impossible to tell how voting is. Sherman Oaks is a relatively affluent and marginally hip part of the San Fernando Valley.

It's about 90% white, a large Jewish contingent and very Democrat. There wasn't much evidence of posters etc around here but then again there never is.

No on recall
Bustamanate
No on 54
Yes on 53

I figured on 53 the more the state is tied down by spending mandates the less they can screw with the budget.

Here near Santa Barbara - my wife mailed in her Absentee on Friday and I got one in the mail (we weren't sure if they were using the machines locally) - so I took my absentee ballot unopened into the polling place..

packed with lil old ladies, one of whom told me to throw away my absentee, so I tore it in half and tossed it in a trash can, THEN she told me to fill out a PROVISIONAL ballot.

I asked if I shouldn't have just filled out my absentee ballot since I couldn't vote in the regular way, and she said, "I'll be alright, don't worry.." -

Filled out the Provisional, folded it and stuck it in the envelope (can you READ a FOLDED Ballot in a machine?) and handed it over to another lil old Lady who stuck it in the side of the ballot box in a slot. I later joked that I didn't like the smell of the smoke coming out of the ballot box where my provisional ballot went in..

My wife's take on this is that this will be a PROVISIONAL scam - the excuse being NOT ENOUGH TIME TO PREPARE - the Media will call this for The GROPER based on THEIR Calculations and then they will begin to count the Provisional ballots while THE GROPER screams at Davis to LEAVE the State House.. for weeks..

I want to know exactly HOW MANY of these Provisionals are DEMOCRATS as compared to the average -- look at Alameda touch screens screwing up so they of course are trotting out the PROVISIONALS -

Does Berkely sound like a potential PROGRESSIVE hotbed of vote?

Yep.. they fooled us, they are using the PROVISIONALS - so we can't complain about a paper trail..

bastards.

... She said that when she dropped by work this morning at about 8am, the parking lot was completely full and they were lined up out the door. Of course, that's the general rule with Republicans, I guess... vote early and often.

Also, even though they're Republicans, many of those were probably McClintock votes, given that she's right next to his district.

SF - southern Outer Sunset district - 10:45 this morning
The place was empty (but don't know if that's normal. I'm new to that area)
The neighborhood is mostly white/asian middle-class, and "conservative" by San Francisco standards.

We used the optical scan thing, and the reader appeared to have an incrementing counter on it which read "95" I don't know how high the counter goes, though. For all I know, that means 1095. Judging by the number of people, I'd say 95 votes was about right.

Stupid voting place in Thousand Oaks that I was assigned to wouldn't keep their list of those who voted up to date so it was impossible to make sure our for sure voters actually got out and voted. Frustrating -- the law says they are supposed to update the list every couple of hours but these dingdongs refused.

about 10 people when I voted at 3 this afternoon. Other than the street construction outside no problems with the polling place, even though it's not the usual one for this precinct.

I've always spot-checked my punch card before turning it in: I don't quite trust them to get aligned correctly, but they've always seemed to work before. Bustamante was on the top of one of the pages.

I did resist the urge to vote for Thunder Trek Kelly (who wants to bring the Armageddon and tax vice) and voted correctly.
