6. He will be running against DeWine for the Ohio Senate seat in 2006.
According to Schumer, head of the DSCC.

8. I do not understand what the big deal is with
Hackett. I live in Ohio, the 1st congressional, and have met him twice. He is inexperienced...sat on the Milford, Ohio city council and has a law practice. He loves his guns...which is fine, I guess. But if you are talking to an audience of urban DFA adults, you don't keep harping on all the animals you enjoy killing...rabbits, deer, squirrel, ducks...he is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

And why do people think that just because he 'can carry 80 pounds on my back and bust in doors in Falluja' makes him a good candidate for Senator???? I don't get it. And remember, this guy was a Reagan boy. He loves to hear himself talk...and doesn't like to listen..gee, is that what we want as a Senator? I don't.

I want a Senator who wants to serve his constituents...not tell them how they should think and how they should act...I don't trust him. He's way too self-absorbed and into the perks and power of the position.

But since most of the dems in office in DC today are spineless, people seem to think that having a macho soldier in office is the answer....I had hoped that Todd Portune or Sherrod Brown would run...good people who care about others...not just the power of the position.

I guess all the people who are any good have left Ohio...wish we had people like John Bonifaz in Ohio.

3. I think he was just a vet
Not necessarily a "war hero." That implies that EVERYONE who serves is a hero.

5. He supported the war, but thought it was mismanaged.
He said this on "Democracy Now".

7. Paul Hackett
is someone to pay attention to ... he has a tremendous amount of potential - could be the 'dark horse' the Dem's are looking for. IMO

9. Paul Hackett in Ohio CD-2
Edited on Fri Sep-23-05 12:55 PM by liam_laddie
As I am in CD-2, I'll add this...Paul joined the Marine reserve
after college, and has stayed in 20+ years (he's now 43.) His law experience and his volunteering (optional) to go to Iraq with his unit led to his being part of a civil affairs unit in and around Fallujah. He was there seven months.

He was urged to run by, among others, a friend of mine who's been close to Paul for more than a decade; this took place right at the airport upon his return from Iraq. Several days were spent discussing it with his family, he then decided to give it a go. He has three children and his wife has, I believe, a doctorate in an
education speciality...very attractive family in all ways.

His voice during the campaign was independent and appealed to all of us who are sick of poll-controlled, consultant-handled,
MOR politicians. I personally believe that his not being a politician per-se is a strength; he has his own voice and principles. There are persistent rumors that he'll run for the US Senate against Mike DeWine(R-OH). With the rethugs fending
off scandals unlimited in Ohio, he probably has a very good shot.
He carried the four eastern counties of the District - rural, expected-to-go-rethug, conservative red zone. He reaches across a lot of boundaries.

He may not fit exactly into each and every policy slot some want, but that is much less important to me than his fundamentals.
Too many liberals are too doctrinaire, IMHO.

edit - sorry about the weird formatting

10. Yes I like him too
After hearing him on Ed Shultz and Thom Hartmann I thought "this is a guy who speaks from the heart" which was why I liked Dean.

He's a conservative Dem, but not a DLC'er. He's a centrist, but not a pink-tutu Dem.
