So Bush Will Do His Storm Photo-Ops From Northcom in Colorado --->>>

What will it say on the backdrop?

Monitoring Hurricanes for America's Safety

This reminds me of the time he spent 9/11 in a bunker in Nebraska.

Bush plans to visit Colorado Friday, monitor Rita from Northcom

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The White House said President Bush will visit the U.S. Northern Command headquarters on Friday to monitor Hurricane Rita, which is forecast to hit Texas or southwest Louisiana on Saturday.

"This will give the president an opportunity to monitor the storm and to get a firsthand look at the federal government's assistance that is going on with state and local preparations and response efforts during Hurricane Rita," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Thursday.

Bush has been harshly criticized for the slow response by federal agencies to Hurricane Katrina.

He is expected to arrive at this air base in Colorado Springs after 6 p.m. and leave Saturday, White House spokesman Allen Abney said.

No other details were immediately available.

1. Well at least he will be engaged
Not sure if that is a positive or a negative - guess we'll find out.

2. I am starting to get worried
Could it be because they are afraid of the nuclear
power plants in Texas?

6. Afraid? Nah, they probably don't want to add to the fustercluck that's
going on with the evacuation by throwing in a presidential visit into the mix. And it probably makes for better photo ops in Colorado since there aren't going to be thousands of protesters there.

18. He could be anywhere on blue screen -- just choose your backdrop.
Just like the New Orleans speech.

Jon Stewart does it with his various reporters every night. They are always right on scene (in the studio, against the screen).

It's just amazing -- you do the math. He could just hunker down at the ranch, for months at a time, "working hard".

Jeeze.... you guys have me laughing instead of crying this morning.

but he's supposed to be in San Antonio later today: http://edition.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/09/23/hurricanes.washington.ap/

"President Bush was to fly Friday afternoon to his home state" (sic) "of Texas, where highways were jammed with people trying to escape Rita's expected landfall early Saturday. The president was to review preparations and thank first responders who were among the hundreds of emergency personnel dispatched to expected disaster areas."

14. That TX photo-op is worse than the Northcom one
That TX one's just going to put him & his entourage in everyone's way. I hope they don't allow him to corral the people who are busy working on the evacuation and take their time up in posing with him. But I bet they will.

13. He likes playing games.
It's like a field trip for him. Maybe the will let him sit in the big chair there and play with the keyboard. Perish the thought.

15. Hmmm, that's where he hid out on 9/11 as well, wasn't it?
After he finished reading 'My Pet Goat', didn't he hop across the country, ending not in Washington or NY, but in the bunker in Colorado?

If so, I hope it reminds people of how cowardly he was on 9/11.

20. Actually I don't think that is where he ended up
Should have ended up there because then he would have been on scene in command to watch the skies..

Bush is never where he should be. Never.

21. Timeline from an old thread about George's 9/11 bunker-hopping >

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
9:03 a.m.: A second hijacked airliner, United Airlines Flight 175 from Boston, crashes into the south tower of the World Trade Center and explodes. Both buildings are burning.
+++
9:30 a.m.: President Bush, speaking in Sarasota, Florida, says the country has suffered an "apparent terrorist attack."
+++
9:43 a.m.: American Airlines Flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon, sending up a huge plume of smoke. Evacuation begins immediately.
+++
9:57 a.m.: Bush departs from Florida.
+++
http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/09/11/chronology.attack /
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

At 12:39 word is that Bush has landed at a base near Shreveport, La. Incredibly, at 12:51, there is footage of a Taliban news conference by one Wakil Ahmed Mutawakel. It is difficult to absorb that Arafat and the Taliban have weighed in before Bush. Five minutes later ABC reports that in Shreveport "the president looked grim. His eyes were somewhat red." The only hard information is that there are no national security people traveling with the president. ABC's Peter Jennings, breaking protocol for news anchors, says forcefully that the country needs words from its president in Washington.

+++

1:08: More than three hours after the second tower collapsed. A taped message from President Bush. But the sound isn't transmitting, and the image is jerky. Then the image goes backwards. Then it goes off.

+++

2:35: Guiliani live again: "The number of casualties will be more than anyone can bear."

+++

3:30: Confirmation that Bush has landed at the Strategic Air Defense Command base near Omaha, Neb. ABC's Ann Compton, traveling with the president, is on the phone to Peter Jennings, whose inflection says it all: "Annie, can you hear me? What are you doing in Nebraska?"

When he asks where Bush is, she replies, "He disappeared down the rabbit hole, Peter."

+++

3:48: For the first time an administration official, White House counsel Karen Hughes, gives a live statement: "The president, vice-president, and speaker of the House are all safe." It is astonishing that this late in the day the White House has nothing more to say.

+++

At 6:41, Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld gives a live press conference -- nearly nine hours after the towers collapsed, a cabinet-level official finally speaks.

+++

8:31: Nearly 12 hours after the attack began, 10 and a half after the towers collapsed, President George W. Bush reads a speech live from the Oval Office.
