Texas Mayor: "Staying? Better write your SS# on your body"

Staying? Better write your SS# on your body...

From one mayor, a sobering message in attempt to get die-hards to leave

PORT LAVACA, Texas - Mayor Alan Tharling of Port Lavaca, a city on the Texas coast between Houston and Corpus Christi, is taking creative measures to make citizens take the threat of Hurricane Rita seriously.

Tharling says that the 1,000 or so die-hards who refuse to evacuate are being given permanent markers and asked to write their Social Security number, next of kin and a phone number on their arm or across their abdomen — so that returning officials can identify their bodies.

Stand by her van: Leighan Cortez, a woman who said she and her family had been on the road for 11 hours as they evacuated ahead of Hurricane Rita, takes a walk while stuck in a traffic jam near Houston.

1. I guess that's a common psychological tactic.
It sounds like a practical thing to do, too, I mean writing the SS# on your body, if you want to be identified.

18. lots of that in Texas---the whole family represented
so other drivers know they are Christians and that anyone without them isn't and so they can live, die, or whatever but they aren't in the club.

I've been asked many times "where are your Christian fish? Aren't you Christians?" Uh, Lutherans don't generally go in for the big show where I come from so I'll never understand this.

3. Good thing the young lady has a Bush/Cheney sticker on her bumper.
She can use it as a reference when she's reduced to begging for help from the government.

10. With 50 mile long traffic jams
some of them have no choice but to stay. Then of course there are the people who can't afford to go. After seeing how poorly run the Superdome and much of the response to Katrina was I honestly don't blame some of the people that want to stay.

15. Practical, ruthless, scarey -- the classic cut! I like this mayor already
He's like a gunslinger from the spaghetti western films. Camera would pull back from a close-up jaw shot of his 5-o'clock stubble, taking in his wide brimmed grey hat, his leathery face squinting in the sunlight, as he's walking down the dusty windswept street with one hand on his sidearm and a fistful of magic markers in the other, calling out the baddies in the local saloon.

"So, y'all gonna get th' hell outta dodge, er wrawtcher guhv'mint numbers on yer bodies fer th' coroner ta see?"

17. What about the people caught in these massive traffic jams on the
freeways? They tried to evacuate like they were told only to be stuck on the damn freeway.

Damn it!
