Anyone hear General Honore almost "cursing out" Press on CNN at
Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 04:34 PM by KoKo01
a press briefing with Nagin, Blanco, Coast Guard Admiral and others? Called a reporter "Stupid...you Stupid I know what you're trying to do."

:-(

He was really loud and abusive. Nagin got hot under the collar too.

It was a dispute over whether the evacuee's for Rita would be able to stay at the Convention Center. Nagin had said that busses would be at the Convention Center to take people out of NO's.

Some of the press hadn't seen any busses and asked how long people would have to wait in line and how would they be communicated with to know to evacuate. Really Gen. Honore was pretty bad.. I lost respect for him with that. And, Nagin seemed to think the press was asking stupid questions, too. Maybe Nagin's just tired of it all..but Honore..ugh.

2. Don't fuck with Honore and Nagin. They're not gonna be polite.
They have lives to save, the dead to bury and a city to rebuild. Please, no would've, could've , should've questions.

3. Honore/Nagin are in charge. Don't have a press conference
if you are unwilling to answer questions.

Peace.

4. I wonder who the reporter was
Honore is ok, he just came across as brusk, thats his way, he is not a politician (thank god). He is trying to save lives. "Stuck on stupid" is his favorite line. Over.

If they don't get it right this time, I think they should be arrested and tried for something.

the "stuck on stupid". They wanted people to know they'd have busses at the Convention Center to take people away if there was an evacuation. Reporters wanted to know how this time would be different. Honore did explain they wouldn't have them wait it out IN the Convention Center, the busses would already be there.

Then he started the 'stuck on stupid' as people kept bringing up the last time. He said they needed to get the information out to the people, not confuse them. It wasn't time to discuss the past, it was this future hurricane plan they needed to let people know about and not confuse them. He even apologized (gruffly) for the stupid part.

But I did get that if what went out in the press was they want people to go in this horrible place again and trust this time that busses would come could confuse the issue and people might fear going since busses were promised before. If they didn't believe busses would surely be there they might fear going and being stuck like last time.

I suspect if Honore says they will have busses waiting there to evacuate there will be. He was rude once he got impatient...but he is not a diplomat.

29. Is seems to ME
(and I'm here in La.)
that the SMART thing to do
would be to line up the buses now
at the Convention Center
then, If people had to go there for evacuation
they would know the buses are ALREADY THERE

9. Loud & abusive....
Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 05:09 PM by ecoflame
I didn't think so. He had just said that the press (reporters) were part of public information dissemination, not a story.

The question immediately afterward was just that - stuck on stupid: why wasn't this done when Katrina hit or was about to hit? That's not the point; that's not the story.

I didn't think there was a dispute but a misunderstanding about 'evacuation plans' were being implemented.

I don't know the question one reporter asked Gen. Honore but his reply was, "that's none of your business." I thought that was hostile in tone & content.

13. Yes...and some of us here were looking at him as a "Hero of NO's." when
he came on board. But listening to him...I wondered what his loyalty to Bush is since Bush cleared out anyone who didn't agree with him in the top brass and so who knows what Honore's qualifications are for this job.

He's a "Fish or Cut Bait" kind of guy...but I didn't see that he had any compassion...and he appeared to be a "Bully Baiter." Not good. :-(

I think he's the kind of General that Chris Matthews would get a "hard on" for...but not what I as a Progressive Dem...would consider as someone who might take "compassion" into consideration over "Damned the Torpedo's Full Speed Ahead," type of Action and Rhetoric....sad..

12. Now that I've thought about this for awhile...
I think my opinion of BOTH Nagin and Honore and Blanco...has had a revision. I see it as a "Southern Thing." A Male Dominance issue with Blanco who has great power but really is a "Steel Magnolia."

It brought back horrible memories of the South for me...It bothered me the way that press conference went. I saw CEO's of Fortune 500 Companies "dressing down" the accountant who questions the dealings of the company or the balance sheet. I saw two people who would "Tote Barges and Lift Bales for Bush."

It was very disturbing.

The police chief... (he always looks like he a plug of chewing tobacco under his lower lip.) He's very 'boastful' I find so I tend to discount down what he has to say. I heard him say yesterday to Jason Carroll on CNN - "I knew who the warriors were going to be and who were the traitors." I was like, oh bullshit! You didn't know shit!

It's that posturing, male posturing....I've seen it diminish in many men as they've grown older & wiser. Or it could be a 'black thang' as well or is that part of that 'male thang?'

25. He stuck to the facts, M'am...and the National Guard Admiral stuck to the
FACTS. There was "snickering in the background" when Honore "let loose" and I didn't really get from their "body language" whethe they agreed or disagreed with Honore going after the Press (including their fist press question by a female report...late males) where he looked like an "Asshole Bully" (Honore) so I couldn't tell if they were "with him or against him" but I actually was glad CNN showed the WHOLE THING.

Sort of reminded me of how C=Span captures for us what goes on when they keep their "camera's rolling," when they televise events.

I think that Press Conference in NO's was a Wake Up call for me about the "Power Struggle."

:)

Mu husband laughed when he heard the "you're stuck on stupid" comment. Said it sounded like every superior he ever had in the Navy!

I had no problem with the comment. They were there to talk about the upcoming storm. They'll be plenty of time to disect Katrina.

15. If you saw the Nancy Grace piece on the 250 National Guardsmen
Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 05:49 PM by oasis
then you'd know why the good General doesn't want to go there.

Last week Nancy interviewed several evacuees who claimed that 250 NG barricaded themselves inside the NO Convention Center and would not answer the pleas for help from the citizens inside who were being terrorized nightly by gangs of armed thugs.

Noooooo. He dosen't want any questions asked about the Convention Center.

Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 06:42 PM by ecoflame
OK - so HOnore has authority over active duty military, which would be the 82nd Airborne and whoever else is there on active duty.

The Guard = does Blanco have authority over all the Guard as governor or just the Louisiana Guard or no one militarily?

Where does Thad Allen (vice-admiral) come in?

34. I could understand this if he was on the ground in middle of NO Crisis
but his trashing of a female and male press members (most from local area press) was just way "below the belt" for me. And...I thought about it for a long time...still thinking about how he Bully Baited the press who really were asking: "How can we trust that folks who show up at Conference Center can feel they won't have to stand in line for hours for busses and ARE YOU going to allow them to come into the Conference Center ..if they are evacuated?

Honore and Nagin got all defensive and trashed the reporters without answering how long folks who didn't evacuate before would have to wait to be evacuated if they showed up at Conference Center. They actually laughed at reporters questions about whether the Conference Center or Super Dome would be open to new evacuee's.

I don't know...I found them both ghoulish. I know they are tired and sick of the sychophantic press but they seemed to fall into the BUSH side from what I heard. Stonewall...Bully...and cut off questions like Scotty does in DC. Somehow their apperance, "on the ground" bullying honest questions (even if it's whore press and the questions were redundant) smacked of ROVE/BUSH tactics to me.

 It's just what I felt..from my gut.

but I am worried about people who might not try to evacuate because of the press making it seem like they may have to wait forever at the convention center.
