Turkey threatens to attack Kurds in Northern Iraq unless America acts decisively against Iraqi Kurd militants operating against Turkey

Turkey is fed up with separatist Turkish group the Kurdistan Workers'' Party (PKK) operating in the Northern Iraq and trying to build an independent Kurdistan snatching land from Turkey, Iraq and Iran. The PKK in the past have worked closely with the U.S.-led or coalition forces against Saddam/s Baathists in Northern Iraq. In recent days PKK is busy consolidating its strength near the Turkey border threatening Kurd rebellion in Turkey. snip

The Iraqi geopolitical scene can become very complex if Turkey really attacks the Kurds. Kurds plan to hide fast behind the lines of the US led coalition forces.

1. "Very Complex" is one way to describe it
Although, I have to admit, "totally fucked up" also springs to mind.

11. Wouldn't surprise me.
I predicted in 2000 that if he was elected, we'd have record high gas prices, he'd invade Iraq, and start WWIII.

4. They mean that too.
In the begining of the invasion. Our troops had to rush north to keep Turkey from comming in and wiping out the Kurds.

7. The Kurds are in a tough spot.
The Kurds want an independent state but have settled for being part of Iraq for now. If Turkey attacks them this will be a major problem for the Bush Regime. Turkey is an ally of the US. What would the Bush Regime do about this?

6. The word fubar comes to mind
Two NATO nations going head to head over a piece of Middle East real estate and fired up by ancient ethnic hatreds.

At the very least this would end NATO.

At worst, I agree with the other poster........WWIII

8. Turkey is making a lot of noise
PKK is no threat and they know it. They are more afraid of an oil-rich moderate independant Kurdistan seceding from Iraq. This could mean future trouble.

What they want now is the US to stop any secession movement...

The Kurds on the other end are waiting for a full blown civil war...

Turkey won't probably not intervene, since it would kill ALL their remaining chances of one day becoming a EU member

15. Pkk is a threat to Turkey
The civil unrest in Turkey cost more then 30000 lives, if Turkey does not act fast things could get out of hand.

PS: Turkey will not be a member of EU.

18. has COSTED up to 37000 according to the BBC
what I mean what is the power of their nuisance TODAY ? their leader is in jail... of course they can still blow up stuff and kill people like the ETA does in Spain. But it's very doubtful if they could mobilize the Kurdish population in Turkey in a massive uprisal. Besides they are still more ot less at war with other Kurds.

and about the EU, the Turks still believe in it anyway...

10. The Kurds are a pretty Nasty bunch. Know why Saddam gased them?
The Kurds attacked an Iraqi Army Fort. The Kurds has the upper hand. So the Iraqi Army laid down their arms placing them Hors de Combat and surrendered. The kurds slaughtered them. That invoked Hamurabi's law. Still practised in much of the middle east. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, and a war crime for a war crime. Eat Sarin with Mustard gas you bastards!

12. Great....Now we see the true pawns and the true players.
Turkey and the coalition of the unwilling is fed up with the situation in the Middle East.

Its essentially now, "If the US doesn't do our bidding and be our baby-sitters we're going to do it ourselves".

This is a nasty situation, the only hope the M-E has is with a United Nations NATO forces put there and a diplomacy act repairing generations of hate crimes. It won't be inhabitable for 20 or so years unless the military gets out of there right away.

16. Turkey wants to pre-emptively strike terrorists.
What a lovely precedent we gave *. Now any country can attack other nations under the "* doctrine" that the dems helped give the resident on a silver platter.
