4. I don't think this is going to last long

The articles that they're putting a fee on seem so arbitrary (Op-Eds, Business, Sports, and Regional news.) The only thing of those four sections I'm interested in reading from The New York Times are two Op-Ed columnists, and I feel they are not worth $50/year. I think the traffic to their website is going to drop like a rock without the free Op-Ed content.

This fee is for Krugman, Rich, et al. Are they worth it? Well, I'd prefer it to be free, certainly, but, as the cliche goes, there's no such thing as a free lunch. If this is a cost/profit issue, then that's fine. You can't expect them to run this at a loss. If it's a screw 'em they have to pay for Krugman issue, then that sucks. I signed up for home delivery of the Sunday Times, which is more than 49.95, but there really is nothing like reading the Sunday Times on paper rather than on the computer, so I don't really begrudge them the charge. Salon charges (or makes you wade through an idiotic ad every time), as do a number of more or less legitimate news sources.

And that's not just the New York Times. It has been a long, slow, decline for American newspaper publishing. They have to find new sources or revenue. Even the NYT is a business! Personally, a buck a week to read Paul Krugman, Maureen Dowd, and Frank Rich is worth a buck a week.

to consider paying, but you do have a point. We let the papers that have more writers who speak out, fold, and we aren't left with much. Print is falling, way down... they do need more revenue. Just something to consider, I still haven't made up my mind about it.

I still think the NYT is a great newspaper. I read it via the web. Sure, it's had a few blemishes lately. I am big Krugman fan, I will even read Brooks from time to time. So for me a buck a week isn't a huge deal.

Remember, it is advertising which supports newspapers, not subscriptions.

If we don't get the opinion pieces, they will appear on other sites a day or so after they first appear on the NYT.

Frankly the news reports and the obituaries are much more important to me than reading what Dowd or Brooks has to say.

I signed up for Sundays - hell, I don't even ready my local paper daily. And, let's face it, folks, just for the online access, it's less than $1 a week - that's under $.14 cents a day. How much do you pay for your coffee, etc. I know you've heard all the arguments. Sure, they may drop this program, and, sure, the Times isn't perfect, but crying over less than fifteen cents a day seems a bit churlish.

You DO NOT have to pay the additional $50. This $50 fee is directed at those who brouse the NYT website and even then I believe that the fee is paid to gain access to the editorial pages. MoDo, Krugman, Frank Rich, Brooks, and the NYT editorials are big draws. If you get the NYT delivered you're off the hook. In some respects I can't blame NYT for doing this.
