Ivanov: US to use nuclear weapons against suspected Qaeda bases
Berlin, Sept. 13, (BNA) US Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld, and US senior officials have not informed Russia on their new plans about the use of nuclear weapons, Russian Defence Minister, Sergey Ivanov, said on Tuesday, adding that he had heard of this intention from international media.

Ivanov said in a statement in Berlin today that Russia would reconsider a large number of Military planning documents if any thing new occurred on nuclear weapons usage.

Some media has pointed out to the fact that the US has been planning to conduct nuclear attacks on some bases, suspected of being used by Al Qaeda to make weapons of mass destruction. The Russian Minister described the new move as " very dangerous step that won't halt the nuclear race rather than accelerating it"

6. Well, they would help explain after the fact why nobody
found the suspected WMDs.

"We know exactly where they were - they were north, west, east, and a little south of Baghdad. Prove me wrong."

10. I tend to agree with you ...
... I think folk are going to get quite a surprise tonight ... and "Katrina" has provided convenient diversion. And, I think the fact that leaders of over 170 Nations are in NYC, has more to do with the timing than anything else.

Just speculation, of course, but I do read and listen to a large number of information resources.

Peace.

18. You may find this interesting, though you've probably already seen it ...
.... and the referencing in the article is substantial:

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Front_Page/GI14Aa01.html

The significance of the fact that the US Delegation at the UN left the room when the President of Iran spoke yesterday is not trivial.

And, while everyone is having fun with the 'potty note', the scale of arrogance displayed by Bush, Condi and Bolton yesterday is unrivaled by any performance of any American delegation in the history of the UN.

Peace.

25. The Headline Is For Starters
Ivanov did NOT say that the U.S. plans on NUKING Al-Qaeda bases and the article never says he said it. The article on the Bahrain site says "some media sources have said..." that. Complete Bullshit Sensationalism to incite Arabs (and others) against the U.S.. Ivanov DID criticize the change in policy the U.S. made w.r.t. nukes, and I agree, we shouldn't be increasing our nuke policy as that only spreads nukes, not inhibits their use.

I think that Art Bell is gone - George Noory is the host now.

But you are right that this seems akin to stories of telepathic communication with Sasquatch (one of my favorite interviews when Art Bell was in charge).

15. More
BERLIN -- Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov warned the United States yesterday against any change in its defence doctrine to allow pre-emptive use of nuclear weapons, saying it would prompt others to seek nuclear arms.

A draft revision of the U.S. Defence Department's nuclear-operations doctrine was made available on the weekend, outlining the use of nuclear weapons to pre-empt an enemy's attack with weapons of mass destruction.

"Lowering the threshold for use of atomic weapons is, in itself, dangerous," Mr. Ivanov told a news conference ahead of a NATO defence ministers meeting in Berlin. "Such plans do not limit, but, in fact, promote efforts by others to develop ."

He said he hoped U.S. Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld would inform him if such a change to the U.S. military doctrine were planned.

38. Ok, lets suppose it IS bull.
Just what DO you think the Russian (and Chinese) attitude is towards the USA announcing that it may PRE-EMPTIVELY use nuclear weapons?

You think they'll clap their hands, throw flowers and welcome us as saviors against those nasty terrorists?

Or do you maybe think they might just wonder who we'll go after next?

This notion of pre-emptively using nukes against AQ is totally bug-f*cking crazy.

I had thought, with the fall of the Berlin wall, that we had stepped back from potential nuclear annihilation. But here comes this Bush Administration, not only returning the nuclear spectre, but actually making it seem much more likely than it has ever been DURING MY ENTIRE LIFE.

I am sick and tired of this Administration turning the USA into the next world villian. I want these people out of office NOW, and I want my country back.

This is the first time I've typed this here on DU.
IMPEACH BUSH NOW.

27. This is very bad news. VERY bad indeed.
I guess we all knew it was coming though.
Remember to tell the people you care about
that you love them, every day.
If the miscreants start lobbing nukes at
people pre-empitvely, we may not have much longer.
Seriously. Think about it.
Is the rest of the world going to sit by and watch?
I think not.
They will have no choice but to stop us.

Conventional nukes would mean a whole lot of fallout on some of George's closest buds (people he cares more about than most of his own people, that's for sure).

37. Russa and China should just come out
and say exactly that. "US we're sick of your shit. If you deploy nuclear weapons of any strength against another human being then a state of war exists between our countries and we will consider a pre-emptive strike on the US." I figure 50/50 odds the people of the US will finally rise up and take out the trash or Bush will just push the button. Either way problem solved. I'm sick of waiting.
