Confronted a freeper in line at post office yesterday....
He was talking to a young woman he knew in the quiet line of 20 or so folks at the post office. He started going on about "People should of known better than to stay in New Orleans." the girl agreed and said "Why would anyone want to stay."....the guy nodded and he said rather loudly that he had no sympathy for anyone who stayed.

At that point I turned to them and said "What about the intensive care patients and all the people caring for them? You know alot of those patients died? Did they have a choice to leave? What about the people who tried to leave but were turned away by police as they tried to cross the Mississippi? What about the people that had no place to go, no transportation, what about shut-ins?" I then said. "There were people who choose to stay, there always will be, there were people who wanted to leave but were stopped, there were people who had no possbility of leaving. Many of those people are dead now."

They looked at their feet and mumbled somehting about that yes there were lots of types of people that stayed. I snapped back "Make sure you don't ever forget that."

Jerks.

2. I like your last line: "Make sure you don't ever forget that."
And, Good on you for speaking to them in such a public way!

They will never forget this little episode and, hopefully, it will change their outlook a bit.

17. You can make them never forget by putting a curse-like memory lock on them
You did well to capitalize on the opportunity.

In situations like this, when you've made a point, you can make them never forget by putting a curse-like memory lock on them. Say something like this to them: "From now on, anytime you are tempted to blame victims or poor people you will think of this time that you blamed the blameless in this huge catastrophe."

You would be linking in their mind a future action with a current shame and embarrassment. The effect would be very inhibitory and each time they are inhibited, they would be forced to think a little. The cumulative effect of thinking a little can make them question the Bush cult programming and make it crumble in the light of day.

14. We won't get his vote, but others in that line were listening.
And we CAN get there votes by standing up to loud mouth idiots and whomping on their dogma with cold, hard facts, presented well.

20. exactly....the hardcores are selective listeners...
By pointing out how dumb they sound makes others not want to accept their POV as general public opinion.

21. And confronting their idiot dogma firmly, rationally, bravely
will give many of them second thoughts about mouthing off. They are bullies and bullies operate only when allowed to. If there is a prospect their actions/words will have consequences they will have to face they are less likely to be obnoxious and pushy. They like preaching to a well behaved choir. Challenges to their authority disarm a lot of them.

10. We need to do more of this
I nailed one at the hair dresser last Sat. She was trapped in her chair and I took the opportunity to start her re-education. We are witnesses and we need to go out and witness.

12. Anderson Cooper
Had a story last night about people(about 80)who tryed to cross a bridge and had shots fired over their heads and were turned back, some of them in wheel chairs. The bridge led to another Parish I guess you would call it.Anderson argued with Senator Vitter that blame should be fixed, otherwise it would be swept under the rug.

15. Thank you for exercising the courage of your convictions! We all need to.
Too many Rush-bots out there blowing hot air. We won't change most of their minds, but we can sure as hell clear the air with some facts.

The talking point spouting dolts have had the podium way too long with liberals being a polite audience, hoping for our turn to speak. They count on that and just refuse to pass the talking stick. We all need to stand up, calmly, but resolutely, and take the talking stick, refute the talking points and help those on the fence decide not to be cowed by the loud mouth louts.

Your story will be an inspiration to many. Thank you for sharing it. You never know how far the ripples of your actions will reach.

18. I wonder how many of those who stayed in the areas which were thought
to be "safe" and had nicer houses with plenty of expensive stuff (and a bunch of "Bush 04" signs in the yard) are called "stupid"?

I have seen enough people who are of the mentality (esp. in Ohio) of "Let them try to break in. This house guarded by Smith and Wesson!"

Those are some of the very people who had the real choice to stay. And those are probably the ones who put Bush in office. Not buying into the "liberal media" who "really wanted the town evacuated to be able to loot at will".
