There's been a lot of discussion here about the rebuilt New Orleans being made into a Disneyfied, corporate "New Orleansland". That would basically be adding insult to injury. To paraphrase the immortal (or nearly so, apparently :-) ) Charlton Heston, "You will pry this city out of my cold, dead hands!"
Here is my proposal: Just up the road (or what used to be the road :( ) is the Mississippi Gulf Coast. As hard as it is to believe, in terms of sheer devastation, the Mississippi coast is even worse off than New Orleans. A couple of small towns have been basically obliterated, while perhaps 75% of structures in Gulfport and Biloxi are damaged.
And so why not offer the corps the Mississippi coast as the site for their little "Vegas South"? I suspect the local population would be considerably warmer to the idea than it will be in N.O. And besides, I hear that everything within a quarter-mile of the coast was leveled for a distance of up to 80 miles. That's 20 square miles of oceanfront property for them to sink their fangs into! Plus, there's even been an attempt to build an airport over by the Stennis Space Center, and towards N.O., which has been looking around for a site for a regional airport for years.
But please, please, corps, stay out of New Orleans! I've been to the "New Times Square" in Manhattan. There is an Olive Garden in the "New Times Square". People actually come to NYC and eat "Italian" food in an Olive Garden. :puke: Spare me the "New French Quarter", please.
