Nagin - "My message to the people of New Orleans is, 'Hang in there.'"
09/07/05

"I saw dry land for the first time in sections of the city," Nagin said.

The 17th Street Canal wall breach has been sealed, and two pumping stations are up and running, he said.

In addition, the large pumping station near Metairie Road is being repaired. Nagin said once that's running, the water will go down much faster.

"The world will change when that happens," Nagin said. "My message to the people of New Orleans is, 'Hang in there.'"

Repair work also continues on the Carrollton Power Plant, which will help not only restore power but help bring back drinking water to parts of the city as well.

"Once that station gets on line, we'll be able to get the water lines flushed and get running water on the east bank," Nagin said.

<snip>

Nagin re-emphasized the need for residents still living in New Orleans to leave the city for the time being.

"Everybody needs to leave except for crazy people like the press, the military and the city (employees)," Nagin said. "This is not a safe environment. I know people don't want to leave because they don't want to abandon their city. It's OK to leave for a little while. Let us get this city cleaned up."

Looks like there is a light at the end of the tunnel and Nagin plans to let the people of New Orleans return as soon as possible. Good News.

1. This is good news. I don't like all those people being displaced.

2. Neither do I
but Nagin had to make it mandatory because if he let people stay and then something bad happened, the Swift Boaters would have hung him from the nearest tree.

I'm glad the water is going down a lot faster then FEMA was telling everyone and that he plans to let people go back as soon as possible.

4. Nagin has done a BETTER job than Guiliani
in this crisis.
AND he wasn't in on it. AND he won't profit off of it after he leaves office.

5. This is it for me
A city. A place. A home. That you love. And don't surrender. It's a deep thing. I don't know what else there is. I would never give up on a place you love. I understand staying. I understand going. So to those that say, "Do we need New Orleans?" as my local Sunday Oregonian top page op-ed said-I say fuck you. Do you need a soul, a home? Ask yourself if you do. Some of us plan on going back-and we only visited. It's a deep thing.
