The Real News is on DU.
Just a thank you to everyone who has been contributing during this disaster. I feel so much more informed than anyone around me. Yeah, you have to wade through stuff, but time and again I find that things mentioned here do show up in the MSM in some form or another after a few days. I can't tell you how many times I've turned to hubby with that, "I told you so" look on my face.

Anyway, thanks.

1. Thank the International News Media while you're at it...
A lot of what gets posted here comes from journalists OUTSIDE of the U.S., who are NOT in the White House Press Pool and are NOT on the Karl Rove payroll.

2. Yes.
I've gotten links to dozens of new news sources from folks here on DU - places I'd never heard of, but now reference regularly. I'm always amazed at the high-level stories they publish in other countries, and yet our news seems to think we're incapable of comprehending anything more than "fire", "blood" "death" and "sex."

4. Ain't that the truth?
I can't even count the number of times I have read a big news item here on DU hours or even days before the MSM gets the story out. And in the case of the Downing Street Minutes, that story was told here MONTHS before the MSM ran with it.

5. Great example.
Yes, the DSM - I can tell you I know more details about that one episode than ANYONE I know. Even now, little tidbits come out and I say, "Remember - I told you about that element back in (god, when was it anymore?)"

And Cindy Sheehan. She was on here long before the MSM picked her up.

6. This is the place to be to see the world,

7. I have links to those, but for some reason,
DU is where I go to first. Often someone will mention something they saw on Rawstory or Bradblog, and I'll go over there to see, but this seems to be home base.

I grew up in Kansas BTW.

11. This is funny because I've only been at DU a short time,
maybe a month, could be less -- not sure, lost track of time since Katrina.

BUT I knew I had it bad when I gave in a short time ago and made DU my home page!!

:bounce: :applause: :woohoo:

And the proof is in the pudding: Since I changed it to DU, I haven't wanted even one time to change it back to Google, which had been my home page for literally YEARS before I came here. I was always an information and news junkie, so I guess I'm a perfect fit here! What's especially NICE is that I find here so many who are waaay more discriminating in their news assessments than everyone else I know. I have some bright friends, and some of them have the good sense to be skeptical about some news reports they read or hear. But none of them grasps just how difficult it is to sort out ANY truth and genuine investigative reporting from the MSM.

I have only one -- no two, uh, no three, quick questions I wish someone would give me answers to:

What does the "n/t" after some subject headings mean, exactly?

What do LIHOP/MIHOP stand for?, and

What is the difference in a "kick" for a thread and a recommendation for Greatest page, if any?

I'll feel a lot better and not so much like a lost little ninny when I know these things! I read the rules and FAQs and all that, but haven't been able to track down these answers.

If ya'll are too busy doing some REAL posting, however, just ignore these queries ... I'll probably figure it out eventually!

*BSEG*

Edited to add the third question, sorry!

~VV

15. Welcome.. n/t means no text
when the subject line says it all.. no need to click it

Lihop_let it happen on purpose
Mihop..made it happen on purpose

kick takes it back to the top of the page.. greatest singles it out to be on a special page with other "greatests" from all forums
