Another disgrace: Football fans take precedence over Katrina victims
To the University of Florida, football is more important than the welfare of the victims of Hurricane Katrina who will be evicted today from hotels and motels in Gainesville and surrounding communities to make way for fans arriving for Saturday's season opener between the Gators and Wyoming.

The university didn't have the decency to postpone the game. Then college football is big money. Besides, many of those who made it to the area before Katrina struck southern Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama will soon be out of money to pay for shelter. So it's out into the street with them.

Americans have such compassion, except when there is a buck to be made. Let the game begin!

Football-crazy towns embrace evacuees
Friday, September 2, 2005; Posted: 9:13 p.m. EDT (01:13 GMT)

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama (AP) -- In football-crazy towns like this one, the confrontation has loomed all week: Would Katrina evacuees be sent packing again, this time by college football fans in town for opening weekend?

The answer has been a resounding no.

Football fans around the Southeast are giving up their prepaid rooms and even tickets to storm victims -- opting to stay home and watch the game on TV.

"We were very concerned," said Jerry Hymel, who took refuge with his wife in Tuscaloosa after leaving New Orleans a week ago. His hotel warned evacuees that they might have to make way for football fans who had made reservations months ago.

"Now, we can't say enough about the hospitality here."

5. Thanks for posting that, Will, I heard that yesterday and was proud
to see that happen.

For you who don't live down here, asking an Alabama or Auburn fan to give up a game is like asking them to stop breathing. These are the most rabid college football fans in the country.

6. Thanks, Will
I've always hated the Crimson Tide, but the Bama fans have risen to the occassion.

Florida? Well, I hope that the Wyoming Cowboys stomp their ass!
