Didn't fly that time, either.

2. No, he's bringing up the sheer idiocy.
EVERYONE is supposed to scream: WTF was she supposed to say?????

The Fed gov was NOT set up to help and, in fact, prevented aid from reaching people time after time after time. Bush's buds.

12. absolutely true the feds i.e. Bush were not set up with the relief
supplies, which probably killed people. But it is also true that governors call up their own state guards....it has nothing to do with the feds. She could also have asked other governors for help and they would have sent their guards in. It may be Blanco was out of her league on this. I became worried when she announced on Wednesday she was declaring it a day of prayer in Louisiana...lame.

7. Umm...hello? He's playing Devil's Advocate. He knows what he's doing.
Framing the questions the way he did was the perfect way to allow that official (whoever he was) to fully express his righteous indignation. by playing the role of those making excuses, Koppel showed just how hollow those excuses are.

Ted has made his mistakes (like the Iraq town-hall meeting), but for the most part he knows how to hit 'em out of the park.

9. Yes, it's a lie. And Ted let that guy show just what a lie it was.
I guarantee, 99% of the people watching that segment are NOT going to come away blaming the governor of LA for this incompetence.

11. I was tricked first too!!
But he kept at it until he got his answer. The Rep. said they are so caught up in following paper work and people are dying. That was what TK wanted to hear.

Along with, (summarizing Reps. ans.) should the Gov. write a blank proposal and let them fill in the blank. She was in the middle of a disaster response and they want her to spend two days filling out forms? You can't ask for it ahead of time because you have no f'ing clue what you will need and how much.

Ted was trying to illustrate the insanity of the whole situation.

The state of Louisiana begged for help on Sunday August 28
by John in DC - 9/02/2005 10:19:00 PM

And Bush had no idea Louisiana needed help until after his vacation Wednesday night, at least that's what the GOP is now trying to spin. The state government NEVER said they needed federal help. Oh yeah, well here's the letter begging for it on SUNDAY, four days before Bush ended his vacation.

here is link to pdf of Blanco's FOUR PAGE memo/request:

13. Ted Koppel is good at what he does
never think for a minute that he doesn't. Ted Koppel is old school and knows beyond a shadow of a doubt this administration is corrupt. He just sings to the "choir" and listen while they "sing" out of tune.

He'a patient--it's old school.

14. Interesting post -
but I think Gov. Blanco will face some music too. I've never been angrier at Bush, he comes in for the main blame by not responding after the situation went critical - the levees burst on Monday night.

Ran into a conservative Dem I know at my local bar tonight. He blamed Bush, no doubt tonight, but I was surprised that he was most exercised about Blanco. Yes the Federal Gov't is in charge, but State Gov'ts have power to exercise too- ESPECIALLY when the Feds are AWOL. As he pointed out, back on Saturday she knew that a category 5 hurricane was likely (tho not certainly) to hit NO. And must have been told that the levees were only built to withstand a cat 3 direct hit. She should have been ready. She didn't prepare well enough. (She certainly doesn't perform well on TV, for what that's worth.)

He was a fireman here in NYC at one point. And he remembered that they used to check the weather report each day -- if 2 feet if snow was a possibility, for example, they had a ROUTINE to follow - get the shovels stacked where needed. Load up the salt in the trucks. And most of the time, you would later, because the snow was not so bad, unload and re-store all the preparations, and the Sanitation guys could take care of it. But you had to be ready. He also put it, as an ex-military - "hurry up and wait" -- it TAKES tons of time for the Army or the feds to respond - that's WHY you set it up so that the contingency force is standing AT THE READY.

I'll be honest, I'm a relatively moderate Dem. I have NEVER been so angry at Bush as I have now -- not even for the hindsight mistakes - but for the INCOMPETENT response once that city started to sink. Bush will take deserved heat for this, as will FEMA head Brown. I think we have to realize, Governor Blanco will too.

15. Did you read her memo? She made it clear they lacked the resources.
Specifically stated that the scale of the disaster would exceed their funds and capabilities. Does that make her incompetent?

16. The memo is a good point -
I was just surprised, I have never been angrier at Bush, and I'm pretty moderate too, but this moderate/conservative anti-war Irish Dem in NYC was complaining most about Blanco. It may be, sadly, that she has NOT come across well on TV over the past number of days.

17. She did request help (search here) and if they say we ARE
coming, who in the HELL would think they meant Friday. She thought they were in action mode while they were sleeping at the wheel.

The RW talking points should be known for what they are, EXCUSES.

There is no excuse in the world for what happened here, PERIOD!

19. First of all, as a lifelong resident
of Louisiana and the south, to compare "snow" to a hurricane is bullshit.

Now as far as Blanco, yes, she needs some scolding, but only because she is being TOO FUCKING NICE. YES, THAT'S RIGHT--NICE. A true "Steel Magnolia" she is in some ways, but to let this group steamroll over her is ridiculous and incompetent. Bush and his crowd are experienced with "crowd control and photo ops" and Blanco is fucked 'cause she's only trying to do her job.

I agree. She has GOT to get tough with these bastards and stop using her southern etique--it's what has kept us southern women down for so long. We have a voice and we are SMART...SMARTER than these dumh fucks...see we can even talk like them.

No, it's not Blanco faults. Take that somewhere else, 'cause it's a brittle and shallow argument:mad:

20. Yes, but a typical state response would rely on the state nat'l guard...
...who of course aren't IN LA, at least not in numbers that could be of any real use. Thus, she's basically had to ask the president for the manpower to carry out a state response, while it's usually the other way around. It's pretty much a sucky situation for everyone.
