evacuated the residents who were going to ride it out. Yeah city council members would have been real effective in forcing residents on the buses.

Ted Koppel ripped the FEMA director on Nightline for trying this "city should have sent buses" shit and said the NATIONAL GUARD SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE GOING STREET TO STREET WITH GREYHOUND BUSES.

1. And who was supposed to handle crowd control in a situation like that?
The school bus drivers?

3. Catch your breath. This is actually accurate.
There are over forty school buses submerged in New Orleans. They keep replaying that shot to make a point. They had all those school buses at their disposal, and yet they left those poor people behind to handle a category 4 hurricane.

The other sign that they were not organized is that all lanes on that highway to New Orleans should have been going one way OUT.

The FEMA, which clearly knew what was going to happen with a category 4 hurricane, should have taken charge. They should have consulted with the leaders in LA and New Orleans and commandeered those buses. If nothing else, those buses would be dry today, instead of submerged in toxic water.

and yes, the failure to provide more evacuation routes needs addressing. but frankly, I think most people who stayed did so because they didn't take it seriously or they were too ill to even make a school bus. It's not neccesarily a poverty thing, many, many people stay behind to try and ride out hurricanes, happens in Florida and the Gulf. None of that means that those people don't deserve our best efforts to save them after the fact.

and 40 busses, holding 50 people? that's 2,000 people. proverbial drop in the bucket.

PLUS: (on edit) the stadium seemed like a good idea at the time, and it was, for one night. not five.

4. Should have been used before the Hurricane for those who wanted to leave.
Should have been used during the Manditory Evacuation before the Hurricane. For those who did one to leave. With a CLEAR idea of where the bus was headed to for hurricane shelter.

Some thing like that should have always been part of the hurricane plan. You cand expect people to leave in mass groups, if you don't provide the ablity to do so.

8. like the poor school bus drivers weren't supposed to evacuate
themselves and their families? Like school busses can handle evacuating the elderly, the people from the hospitals, prisons, nursing homes, babies? Incredible.
