That is fucking it. I don't care who it is. It will be the beginning of the end. We will never recover from this.

9. YES I DO.
The only job of a soldier is to die when he is told to. That's what I did in Viet Nam. Get shot at in Saigon and not shoot back. You're there to protect people, not kill them.

11. You absolutely have to be kidding
You expect the NG to stand there and take fire without returning it? Then why even waste the time to send them in? If it is known up front that they will not use their weapons, they just become sacrifices.

No one in NO should have a gun except the authorities. If one is raised by a civilian as a threat to one of our soldiers, I hope they take him out with a bazooka!

13. Oh really
What if the guy stealing the color tv is among the people scavenging for food? Collateral damage? And what if the people you think you re protecting don't like it? Are you going to shoot them too.
How much training do you think these guys get in civil disorder? None. Maybe they're supposed to but they don't. Most of your time in the NG is just fucking around. They weren't trained for Iraq, they weren't trained for this.

15. And what if someone starts killing innocent people?
Don't shoot then? You're out of your mind.

We start out talking about shooting looters and now you want to change it to anarchic death squads. Get real.

18. Your OP said nothing about looters
and reports have murders going down in NO. That's about as real as it gets.

12. "There to protect people"
So, if someone is trying to impede the relief effort to "the people"...they should be justified in "protecting the people".

10. No
We expect them to defend themselves from attack, we don't expect them to think that they're in Iraq and can just shoot at anything that moves, or what they suspect might be threat to them.

This isn't a combat zone, it's an American city, the people have been
left to fend for themselves by the same government that's giving the
orders to shoot to kill our fellow Americans.

We expect them to detain looters and other criminals and then turn them over to the civilian authorities asap.

We expect them to conduct themselves as US Army soldiers, not private
security guards.

At least that's what I expect.

3. Doubt it.
There weren't riots in every U.S. city after Kent State.

14. And' you'll be the judge of whether it's a righteous shot?
I sometimes wonder if people on DU have actually noticed the crime, not including looting for survival, that has been going on there. The lawlessness is what prevented a lot of the aid to get to the people.. .and now you have some threat that you'll riot if they shoot anyone? Are you all going down there to monitor this? Or will you just go off if anything happens, regardless of the circumstances.

What I'm seeing on DU for the first time in years... is a wierd mix of compassion (frankly not enough compassion) and more personal agendas with the police and military and the government.

Can you work on something positive for a while? 90% of these threads have been negative and inflamatory. You are pre-judging everything that may happen there, and interpreting every single word and action through a personal prism.

How about saying thank god the help has finally arrived (as many of the evacuees did), see how you can help to lessen the suffering, then hold the politicians and bureaucrats to the fire when it's time to assign blame.
