9. That's all well and good but those who said it was the news sources
being piped in, not Yahoo!, and that one group used different language, were correct. It was different sources and data.

Yahoo! assembles, it does not write the captions. They simply came together that way electronically.

http://news.yahoo.com/page/photostatement

"To Yahoo! News readers:

News photos are an especially popular section of Yahoo! News. In part, this is because we present thousands of news photos from some of the leading news services, including The Associated Press, Reuters, and Agence France Press. To make this volume of photos available in a timely manner, we present the photos and their captions as written, edited and distributed by the news services with no additional editing at Yahoo! News.

In recent days, a number of readers of Yahoo! News have commented on differences in the language in two Hurricane Katrina-related photo captions (from two news services). Since the controversy began, the supplier of one of the photos – AFP – has asked all its clients to remove the photo from their databases. Yahoo! News has complied with the AFP request.

Here are a few of the postings that have commented on the photo caption language:

Flickr

Salon

Romenesko

Gothamist

You can comment on the issue on this message board.

Yahoo! News regrets that these photos and captions, viewed together, may have suggested a racial bias on our part. We remain committed to bringing our readers the full collection of photos as transmitted by our wire service partners.

Neil Budde
General Manager
Yahoo! News "

At any rate, AFP, the group that did not use looting language and the one that posted the white photo pulled it. This is what you get now:

"To our readers: This photo was removed from Yahoo! News at the request of AFP."

12. While it broad terms it shows that our country still is racist, you cannot
hold Yahoo! responsible for how its electronic database pulls that stuff together.

There is racism in our country -- no argument. Just saying that in this case Yahoo! looked bad and it was almost certainly crappy luck for them.

15. I think it was close to the end, but maybe right after the middle, if
that makes any sense. In other words, Go to the halfway point (30 minutes in) and look forward toward the end. I know it couldn't have been in the first 15 minutes, because I was late tuning in.

17. Okay... one more time
I'm gonna get flamed for this, but I don't care. This was my response in another thread on this topic:

The AP photographer saw the person in the photo go into the store and take the items, and therefore was justified in writing "looter" in the cutline. The AFP photographer did not witness looting and therefore could not assume the items were looted.

Nothing was implied here but a lot has been inferred. It's an unfortunate (for the AP) coincidence that the "looter" was black and the people in the other photo were white, but no apology is due for a coincidence or for what readers infer.

20. I won't flame you, but I'll think a lot less of you.
He was wading through chest-deep water with a six-pack of Pepsi. Yeah, if I was going to loot, I'd definitely get me some Pepsi. Oh, wait...all the good stuff must have been in the garbage bag...yeah, that's right...I hear 7-Eleven carries a great selection of diamonds.

Pfffft!

19. I just checked the links out to those pictures.
The picture of white people finding has been removed "due to a controversy about its language", but the picture of the black person "looting" is still there.
