42. 9/11 was a couple of buildings
NO is a whole city, and there is tons of destruction outside of NO. This is, indeed, a tragedy far greater then 9/11.

56. 3000 people died on 9/11
While it's true that 9/11 was confined to a smaller area, it may be that more people lost their lives in that tragedy. We won't know for sure until a reliable estimate is available for this one. In any case, trying to rank tragedies is kind of dubious. They're both terrible.

65. True, They're both terrible.
But I think body counts is a bad way to estimate too. I mean, after 9/11, we didn't have 500,000-1,000,000 refuges either. A whole city is GONE for at least a month or two, maybe three or more. These people have no homes to go back to; no jobs, no food, shelter, clothing, money, or even water. 9/11 was bad but much of the human tole happened on 9/11. The damage here is still happening and may get worse before it gets better.

name) and he is distressed to say the least. He repeatedly said that the excuse being given for buses not going to the convention center (that it is unsafe) is NOT true. He stated more than once that 'these are law abiding citizens who did what they were told to do and now they have been abandoned'.

Where is the convoy of troops and supplies that was supposed to be on the road yesterday to help these people. Why doesn't anyone with any authority speak about this....

Despair grips New Orleans
From staff and wire reports
HURRICANE KATRINA

As a tired, hungry and frustrated crowd chanted ``Help us! Help us! Help us!'' in front of the New Orleans Convention Center this morning, someone pulled back a filthy blanket to reveal a gray-haired man slumped dead in a lawn chair.

All around, the 8,000 or so refugees in this uninhabitable city stretched in a long line across down Convention Center Boulelvard, demanding help from police and military who kept moving past.

"They treat us like animals,'' said Angela Perkins, who had fallen to her knees, clasped her hands and screamed out a prayer. "They can send me anywhere. They can send me to Africa.''

...

"I'm scared,'' he said. "I slept on the ground last night. I don't have anything to eat. The last time I ate was Monday.''

Surely they'd want to say the people should have eaten so much food knowing the storm was coming, that they could live off their own body fat for a few days.

36. And an expert made the point that, once the 9/11 people walked away
from Ground Zero, much of New York could still function within a couple of days. New Orleans is totally effed up -- the whole city. And there's no way to walk away -- and they have nowhere to go -- they can't just jump on the Staten Island Ferry!

The zip codes in the area are 7011# if that link doesn't work.

I certainly don't mean this as a sick joke. If it were to rain at least some water would be available. They could use buckets, shoes, their hands SOMETHING.

This is sad and amazingly sad to watch and I am just reading about it.

Pray hope dance whatever you can for rain.

59. Guardian of London: Bodies piling up at Convention Center
http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-5248531,00.html

At least seven bodies were scattered outside, and hungry, desperate people who were tired of waiting broke through the steel doors to a food service entrance and began pushing out pallets of water and juice and whatever else they could find.

An old man in a chaise lounge lay dead in a grassy median as hungry babies wailed around him. Around the corner, an elderly woman lay dead in her wheelchair, covered up by a blanket, and another body lay beside her wrapped in a sheet.

``I don't treat my dog like that,'' 47-year-old Daniel Edwards said as he pointed at the woman in the wheelchair. ``I buried my dog.'' He added: ``You can do everything for other countries but you can't do nothing for your own people. You can go overseas with the military but you can't get them down here.''

Just above the convention center on Interstate 10, commercial buses were lined up, going nowhere. The street outside the center, above the floodwaters, smelled of urine and feces, and was choked with dirty diapers, old bottles and garbage.

...

People chanted, ``Help, help'' as reporters and photographers walked through.
