Has anyone done a timeline of Bush's response to Katrina?
Edited on Wed Aug-31-05 08:50 PM by Poiuyt
For instance:

Mon, Aug 29 - Katrina becomes cat. 5 hurricane, bears down on New Orleans; Bush eats cake with John McCain.

Tue Aug 30 - Katrina devastates New Orleans, Mississippi, and Alabama coast line; Bush plays guitar at San Diego fund raiser.

Wed Aug 31 - Bodies floating in flood; Bush finally decides to take the two day trip back to Washington.

1. Good point. We need to fit in what went wrong in terms of evacuation and
the lack of $$ to do the levees up right and the NG being out of the country...

20. Yes, ideally. Sunday evening would have made sense.
I just talked to someone who was taking their kid to Tulane. They got there Saturday and the folks at Tulane said to go home and that they probably wouldn't be open for a couple of months. Tulane knew that on Saturday, why didn't the White House?

And Chris Matthews was on the air on a Sunday night specifically to cover the approaching hurricane. If Chris Matthews and MSNBC knew it was a big deal, why didn't the White House?

8. The problem is
they can't ramp up his meds quickly enough to get him in front of a camera. When we have a real emergency, like this or 9/11, and he's in vacation or campaign mode, it takes several days to drug him enough for him to perform his "virile leader" act. He has to be prepped for 3 days to give a 3-min speech, and then there's the careful narcotizing required to keep him from drooling and/or having a cursing fit. Presidentin' is hard work.

29. I do believe so: he spent the day's first half in Arizona pushing
reaming out Medicare, then flew over to San Diego: the day before he had cake, the day after (yesterday) he minced about with soldiers and then went to his pig farm in Tex. to mince about some more, just a few hundred miles west of the devastation

16. there should be a dual picture--bush smiling and waving at his "base" on
monday (not sure whether that shot was at luke or in CA) right next to an image of that 25ft wall of water slamming into gulfport and biloxi, to be shown every commercial break, and be the backdrop to every single time his name is mentioned on a newscast

28. Katrina was declared category 4 very, very early on Aug.28;
it was upgraded to category 5 later that morning (but still before dawn).

That was Sunday. An hour or two later state/city officials in LA called for evacuation, which would probably have been silly to call for when it was a category 3 storm on Saturday had Katrina not strengthened significantly (as forecast, with some doubt).

Aug. 29: Katrina strikes N.O. People breathe sigh of relief over N.O., it was spared the damage many feared (although the wind damage was nothing to laugh at: it could have been much worse); the storm ravages MS later that day.

Aug. 30: N.O. levees breached, N.O. looks to be going to hell in a handbasket, most people push Mississippi to the back of their minds. * played guitar, announces return to DC next day. Marching band plays in Biloxi.

Aug. 31: today.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Atlantic_hurricane_season#Hurricane_Katrina seems to be fair.
