Apparently the word has gotten out about the potential gas shortages in the Atlanta area. I live about 30 miles north of the city and every, and I mean every, gas station had lines 10 deep at every pump. A ride than normally takes me 30 minutes with traffic took close to an hour because of the backups caused by the lines.

I did notice a small rise in prices when I could see them. But my wife reported that some stations near her job were up to $4.75 per gallon. The other weird thing was that I had difficulty getting a cell connection. Probably everyone calling everyone else about the crazy gas situation. It felt like we had some kind of disaster.

As many have pointed out, I think we are beginning to see an ugly ripple effect from Katrina. If Atlanta does run dry, it's going to get real ugly real fast. For anyone who desn't remember the gas problems of the 70's, I think you are going to get your chance. Only it may be worse

is when it gets half-empty she goes and fills it up. That way it helps saves and makes it a bit cheaper instead of a full tank. Before the prices went up we payed around $26 for a full tank. Now it's of course going to be more.

We have two cars and if we really need my dad can always ride his bike to work. He does most days anyways when it's really nice so that helps us save gas. It only takes him about fifteen minutes to get to work and the grocery store is just a hop, skip and a jump down the road. Luckily my mom and I don't go out much. Another Athens DUer told me a gas staion on Broad Street raised prices to $3.75 today. It was $2.65 for reg yestereday and $2.99 this afternoon in Oconee County. Price gouging on massive scale. I hope Bu$h and his buddies are happy now.

with no warning. Someone knew something because about 1:30 pm today rumours started flying and there was a MASSIVE run on gas. Stations are running out of gas. Prices rose from $2.65 to $2.99 for regualr and another DUer posted that a W. Broad St. Chevron had some gas at $3.75 gal. My god. It's chaos. There were already drive offs at local gas stations. I can't imagine what will happen now.

Advance planning can save a lot of misery. The next big crisis is heating oil and natural gas. Build solar air heaters and buy wood stoves now. They will save you a bundle in a few months. Also start figuring out how to grow food now and do it. You will be glad.

People panicking over here too...prices jumped from about $2.65 this morning to $2.99 just 5 or 6 hours later. Lines at most stations, although they seemed to slack up a bit towards 5pm. I've seen one station thatw as confirmed out of gas, and overheard someone saying they were in line behind some asshole buying 250 gallons.

People are really going crazy out here....

The Citgo over on the corner of Jimmy Carter and Old Norcross-Tucker that was at $2.69 around noon today is currently at $2.87 and lines around the station that I'd estimate to be about an hour and a half in wait time.

I'm going over to the local auto parts store after dinner to try and find a locking gas cap, I'll take my digital cam and get photos.

I think so as well. I think this will be a test for Bush. If he can't get the country out of this mess many more people will wake up from him.
I hope he's ready for it. Not just for himself but for all of us. This is the time when we need a real leader. Not a fake cowboy, but someone who seriously is a leader and cares about us as a country. My mom said gas down the road is now 2.75 or something like that. I'm not exactly sure but she went down and got gas earlier today and it has risen up. Gas in another part of town where we used to live is $2.80 and I'm in southeastern Tennessee.

And what's really scary is that it appears that the American populace is being left to fend for itself when it comes to these catastrophic events. I'm in now way trying to compare a run-up in gas prices in Georgia to what's happening in NOLA and the Gulf Coast, but apparently there is a perception running through GA, NC & SC that gas may not be available in a few days and there is NO governmental prescence to guide people through it.

Sure recipe for disaster because this is the perfect climate for all sorts of rumors to start.

Against my Hubby's wishes, I went out and brought a new 5 gal gas can and filled it up ahead of the storm - we already had one full. Last week I badgered him into buying two motorbikes to get around on - 60mpg.

I'm going to be unbearably smug when he gets home tonight - I wish I'd stockpiled a bit more gas now, but 10 gals will get us by for a fair while on the bikes.
