The superdome is turning into a concentration camp...
...and maybe even a death camp if they don't hurry up and get those poor folks out of there.

1. They are still adding people I've heard.
The people they rescue from roofs and attics.

2. The mayor said they would have to stay there for a week.
The governor said they need to be evacuated as soon as possible.

The lack of toilets alone ... won't diseases start soon?

4. They need Transport Helos in there NOW
Get these people out of there, fly them to safty. Get them out NOW

The CH-47D Chinook is a highly versatile heavy-lift helicopter. Its primary missions range from troop movements and artillery emplacement to battlefield resupply. With its triple-hook cargo system, the CH-47D is able to carry heavy payloads-for example, bulldozers and forty-foot containers-and still travel at speeds over 155 miles per hour. In air assault operations it often serves as the principal mover of the 155-mm. M198 howitzer, thirty rounds of ammunition, and an eleven-man crew. Like most Army helicopters, the Chinook is equipped with advanced avionics and electronics, including the global positioning system.

5. CNN just reported buses are lined up outside the Superdome
to take people to well-equipped shelters in Houston TX.

??? I thought there was chest-high water surrounding the Dome.

8. they weren't letting reporters in...
though at the beginning there were a few pictures. I guess those journalists snuck in then high-tailed it out of there.

I hope some reporters *are* there, maybe incognito, so we can here what's going on...

They people aren't allowed to leave, and are being kept in against their wills by force.

12. That post really sounds a bit overwrought. I went through the Northridge
earthquake in 94 and the neighborhoods hit hardest NEEDED controlled circumstances to get through that week. The people most effected APPRECIATE organization and direction , especially when you have no idea what is going on in the surrounding area.

36. Proof...
With water pressure dwindling, the bathrooms are filthy. Barrels overflow with trash. Anxious to see what happened to their homes, a large group of refugees gathered by barricades near an exit and demanded that they be allowed to leave. They were told it is not yet safe.

They are being held prisoners. They are not free to leave.

14. The Place Is Designed To Hold 50,000 Seated
That doesn't count the many inner rooms of the building including, from what I heard, a fairly large banquet hall as well as the basketball arena across the street that appears to look like it didn't take a lot of damage...that place seats 20,000. So, in essence these two building should hold 70,000 seated...and that doesn't count the large arcades and inner workings of those buildings.

The critical problem is the sanitation, food and water. There's generators that keep the lights on and it's been reported there's medical facilities...and a constant airlift of injured from the Superdome. Yes, it's hell inside, but it sure beats what's outside. These people have no place to go and no one ever envisioned these facilities to be used for long term shelters...thinking they'd help weather the storm and those inside would be on their way.

Here's hoping there are boats on the way that can get to the Superdome where busses can't and have fresh water, food and sanitation aboard...getting those people out of there. Hopefully Governor Blanco (who discussed this plan last night) coordinates this mass exodus. The city is going to have to be evacuated totally. There'll be plenty of time for finger pointing once the situation stabilizes.

18. I give you that it's not ideal accomodations...
but they are safer there than anywhere else in NOLA right now. They will be removed to a better location AFTER the people who are trapped on their roofs and in their attics are taken care of. Simple priorities.

As to the soldiers with guns running the place, probably not the worst idea. Sorry, but with the potential for a riot so great there has to be some kind of authority.

20. I suppose they could...
but the fact is they are SAFE in the superdome. They're not going to drown, and the structure is stable. All available manpower is going to help people who are in imminent danger.

Please resist from politicizing this kind of disaster. It's a bit insulting.

21. It's the sanitation that will really break things down quickly.
From what I understand, the washrooms have long been trashed and are unuseable. (Running water issues.)

I hesistate to even think about how people are attending to their toilet needs.

And a good estimate right now is 20,000 people in there.

Not good. Not good at all. What about those who need to take prescription meds daily? Medical needs? Infants and toddlers? Pregnant women? The elderly? My God.

25. All true points.... BUT-
those needs aren't going to be met much better outside of the dome. There is no potable water to be had in the New Orleans area, and much of the flood water is infested with sewer and petroleum.

Yes, the issue of the dome is a problem but for the moment, it's down the list.

27. It's down the list until a substantial number of the 20,000
get truly agitated.

I'm not saying any one thing is worse than the other. I DO think that being in the dome probably has just as many disadvantages (just different ones!) than being outside it.

Six of one, half dozen of the other if you ask me.

Just hope all those people in the dome manage to stay calm. As the hours go by and they aren't evacuated the chances of that calm holding will grow slimmer and slimmer, I am sad to say.

:-(

Sorry, but methinks that YOU'RE the one that needs to go to freerepublic- not me. While I don't intend to stoop to their level, you obviously have no problem with it.

28. Your comparison is revolting...
Let's spot the differences.

Concentration Camp: Essentially, a prison facility
Superdome: People are free to leave

Concentration Camp: zyklon-b showers, ovens
Superdome: Toilets don't work, water on the floor (like the rest of the city)

Concentration Camp: people starving to death
Superdome: people are hungry, but relief groups are working to bring in food and water

Concentration Camp: Tool used by nazis to kill millions of jews
Superdome: Tool used by rescuers to protect thousands of people

33. I'm fairly sure when somebody says "concentration camp"...
They are referring to the nazi ones. I am not aware of any non-nazi concentration camps.

"Why don't you go stay there right now and see how YOU like it?"
This is beside the point, if I was in NO and I was poor and couldn't evac, I would rather be in the superdome than in my former house.

"BTW, the people in the dome are NOT being allowed to leave."
As I type I have BBC news on, they are showing helicopter video of a large number of people leaving the superdome.
