Edited on Tue Aug-30-05 03:37 PM by htuttle
How about a Day of Work? Or a Day of Search and Rescue? Or a Day of Feeding and Housing Displaced People? Or a Day of Fixing the Goddamn Levees?

11. For your info....several wings and squadrons of the Civil Air Patrol
have been doing what you just suggested. There are people working their asses off and I'm getting sick of hearing the ragging on them.

3. I think praying is helpful for some people
I guess it makes them feel like there is a higher power that will help them.

It can't hurt, right?

6. People can pray while they look for survivors.
No need to set time aside for it.

14. They are in a way....
but let me ask you which do you prefer and remember in this situation you can't have it both ways...

{ ) A person saving your life
( ) A person praying that your life will be saved

Praying doesn't mean you stop all action.

As this is only my second-ever post, but I, too, get a bit irritated by all the theistic talk in times like this (ESPECIALLY from 'news'casters).

It presumes a monolithic belief in the supposed deity which I find pointless and offensive. I can understand how, if you are a theist, you would certainly have that reaction, but it's just not appropriate coming from a head of state. I would be far less offended if she had just said, 'I think for those of us who are religious, we should continue to pray for these people and use that energy to figure out what we can individually do to help the rescue effort' or something to that effect.

It's just so lame though, IMHO.

EDITED to include that I realize the governor said this, not the newscaster. Although I would like to add that I heard Nancy Grace say a few weeks ago that the rescue of that lost Boy Scout in Idaho was a 'miracle from the Lord' or something very similar (definitely using both those words, but maybe not in that exact phrasing). Anyway, it made me want to scream.

13. Two things:
LA went for Bush last time. I'm thinking there are a lot of religious types there who don't mind that speech. They elected her, after all.

Also, the woman is in shock, she's dealing with a lot, I don't think she's trying to offend you in your dry house/workplace that has electricity and clean water.

19. welcome to DU!
And I agree - I think its silly. And, like being able to "support the troops" but not the war, it is possible to think that govt officials and newscasters are somewhat out of line talking about superstitious beliefs that not everyone shares, and still have compassion for people suffering through this disaster.

Pray all you want if it makes you feel better - but don't "proclaim" that I should pray, too, or that I am not a good person if I don't pray too.

Your comment is right-on IMO and I only hope people are able to see it is not simply about this situation but the offensive presumption that *everybody* believes in praying to some entity.

I thought The Daily Show brought attention to this beautifully when the AirFrance plane crashed recently and so many newspersons called it a miracle that no-one had died.

Welcome to DU! :)

Off subject but have you noticed that Nancy Grace seems to have taken voice/diction lessons? I ran across her horrible show last week and actually heard her say "Straw-Ber- rEE" I was shocked.

22. Some actual CONTEXT would be helpful
For example, she was asked by a reporter what people can do to help other than sitting around and feeling horrible and helpless. Among other things, she said we should pray tomorrow.

What the fuck would YOU have said?

Of all the things you could have posted about this tragedy, this is what you picked?

:wtf: right back at you, buddy.
