"Brigitte Bardot calls for halt to use of puppies as shark bait"

http://sg.news.yahoo.com/050825/1/3ui77.html

"Brigitte Bardot, the 1950s and 1960s film star turned animal rights campaigner, has called on the French government to halt the reported use by fishermen on the island of Reunion of live puppies and kittens as shark bait."

"The French Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) told the daily the dog was the victim of cruel fishermen who attract sharks by throwing puppies or kittens into the water, tied to fishing lines, and wait for the predators to swallow the thrashing animals"

3. Why is it "sick" to use live puppies and O.K. to use live fish as bait?
Unless you believe that cute animals have more of a right to live, the argument holds no water.

18. I think both are barbaric, but...
when you use a live fish as bait, the respiratory system of the bait still works--because fish are designed to respire in water.

Puppies are designed to respire in air and drown when you put them in water for long periods of time.

19. Granted, but both are then eaten alive by sharks.
Speaking of which, why is it O.K. to kill sharks and not puppies?

I'm just commenting on the hypocritical idea that it's O.K. to harm ugly animals but not cute ones.

29. Fish are eaten alive by sharks anyway
And I think it IS okay to kill puppies in some people's minds, so long as they don't see the killing. What do they think a dog pound is for?

30. So it's O.K.?
I'm not making a value judgement on fishing, I'm just pointing out that bait is bait. If somebody is upset about puppies being used, they should also be upset about fish being used (even though fish aren't as cute).

24. It's not that dogs are cuter ...
it is that they are more intelligent and can sense fear and pain more. And because of the history of interdependence and cooperation between dogs and people we "owe" them more than that kind of treatment.

just sickened. Of course I signed the petition. The island this is taking place on is far away in the Indian ocean and apparently the animals are ferals.

Cruelty like this is intolerable anywhere. I don't see people cuddling a fish and it sleeping in the baby's crib at night.

7. Didn't Brigitte Bardot make some very anti-Islam remarks recently?
She was complaining about the "deterioration" of French culture because of immigrant Muslims, as I recall.

Ironic that she supports anti-religious bias but is passionate about animal rights.

8. Please sign the petition
Please go to the following web site:

http://www.30millionsdamis.fr/fr/index.asp

At the first category, there is a photo of a dog with a hook in his nose, click on that, it will give you a petition in English
Subject: Dogs being used as shark bait!
PLEASE SIGN! DOGS BEING USED AS SHARK BAIT!!!
Dogs are being used as live bait on the French island and holiday
destination La Runion! This is absolutely horrifying and not worthy of anyone calling themselves human beings... Please sign this French
petition (click "sign petition" to get details in English). I don't know if any international animal rights groups are aware of this and working on the case, but please spread the word! Thanks!

After reading the message about the use of dogs as shark bait by
fisherman of Reunion Island - I have been doing some digging to see
what I could find out - and, to my horror, it is really happening.
Above, you will find the link to the island's tourism website.
I plan to encourage a letter writing campaign, and would like to
know if there is something more that can be done?
Seeing that photo of the dog with the HOOK through its nose at la
Fondation 30 Millions d`Amis website was repulsive!
Can anyone tell me what, if any, animal rights/welfare groups are
actively campaigning against this, other than the la Fondation 30
Millions d`Amis?

13. I'm not against using live fish as bait.
I don't see why dogs and cats are any different.

If you're against fishing in general, fine. If not, it doesn't matter what you use as bait.

21. It certainly is an interesting perspective
among non vegetarians, when it comes to criticizing the killing of some animals, but not others.

But it's understandable. I think the killing of domesticated animals is what is disturbing to many. After all, people are horrified by someone that microwaves a cat or when they see dogs in butcher shops in Korea, but that same person might love a juicy steak.

Now, I'm not necessarily criticizing that (after all here in the west, certain animals have been bred almost purely for consumption), but I still find it interesting.

33. I agree.
Why is it O.K. to eat a burger (which came from a 2-3 year old animal) but not O.K. to eat veal?

If you don't have a problem with eating beef, having a problem with eating puppies is NOT an ethical issue, it's socialization.

25. Do you eat dogs?
Do you eat fish?

Enough said. Point made. Period.

I am not huge PETA supporter or anything, but I swear if I saw someone using a puppy as fish bait I would beat them senseless and stick a hook through their lip.

31. I don't, but plenty of people do.
It's not a matter of suitability as a food source, it's a socialization issue. In the west, we don't eat dogs. In the east, they do.

The fact remains that they're both animals that are suitable as bait. If you're going to get upset about using one, it's inconsistent to have no problem with using the other.

15. A Christian fella around here picks
up free kittens and feeds them live to his hunting dogs. I guess it makes the dogs better at killing raccoons and hunting bears.

The reason I say "Christian" is because he makes such a big production out of his faith. Big wooden cross around the neck, a half dozen stickers on the truck, and bible scripture quoting / witnessing almost incessantly

I'm pretty sure this would be considered animal abuse.

And FYI to anyone reading this: THIS IS WHY YOU ***NEVER*** GIVE AWAY ANY ANIMAL FOR FREE, ESPECIALLY PUPPIES AND KITTENS.

It's in Runion, which is in the Indian Ocean, a French dominion. Brigitte Bardot is a nutcase by the way, which doesn't necessarily mean that she's wrong about this of course.
