DONNELLY, Idaho - President Bush charged Tuesday that anti-war protesters such as Cindy Sheehan, who want the troops brought home immediately, are "advocating a policy that would weaken the United States."

In remarks to reporters outside an exclusive resort where he is vacationing, Bush gave no indication that he would change his mind and meet with Sheehan, who lost a son in Iraq and has emerged as a harsh critic of the war there, when he returns to his Texas ranch Wednesday evening.

On Sheehan, the grieving mother who has camped near his ranch since Aug. 6, the president said he strongly supports her right to protest. "She expressed her opinion. I disagree with it," Bush said.

He has scheduled more than two hours to meet with family members of slain soldiers Wednesday at the Mountain Home Air Force Base near Boise, Idaho. Bush said most military families have a different viewpoint than Sheehan. "She doesn't represent the view of a lot of families," he said.

That's a simple canard the right has been throwing around, just like "Emboldening the enemy." But, never has anyone been able to provide the mechanism by which withdrawing the troops and having the most well-equipped army in the world on our own shores would weaken the United States. Nor have i heard anyone even attempt to explain how protesting the war emboldens the other side. Yeah i know, if they hear that some of us are against it, they got one less reason to quit fighting. But, that requires the supposition that if 100% were in lockstep support, that they would quit fighting. That's almost impossible.

But to deny it, what you say, that we will, indeed, change public opinion "if you send enough people home in body bags", is pointless, when it's true. We only make ourselves look like pathetic liars, attempting to deny the obvious, that we aren't divided on the subject. Then it makes us look merely thoughtless, having no care at all.

If they want us to leave that badly, shouldn't we? If the American people believe we should, then shouldn't we? They may fight among themselves, but they are most certainly fighting us, that isn't theory or politics or even guesswork, it's Iraq and it's bloody. Horrible lives for the people there, and no end in sight.

They know, everybody knows, at this point, that we WILL sacrifice lives and expend troops. How can anyone on the planet not know that the US will, if it deems necessary, go to war?? It's been show to be a fact. Not to mention being ready and willing to kill who knows how many THOUSANDS of them. Our pulling out at this point would NOT exactly invalidate our happy willingness to to to war. We've proved it well enough.

Leaving before we're well and truly divided over it would be a better indicator of our national strength. Now...if it takes a major anti-war effort to stop the war, THEN we'll be seen as weaker militarily. Because we WILL be, in that case. That could be a problem.

Leaving sooner might, however, just might illustrate that we don't WANT war, death and destruction, all for profit. It might cause peoples in other nations to believe that that the loss of life DOES, indeed, mean something to us. Something we haven't gone to great lengths to prove to the world much recently. Show that we aren't just bloodthirsty killers, as they believe us to be, and as we continue to live down to.

We've never been so POLITICALLY weak, and to me, that's a far greater danger.

I'm afraid I don't agree with you at all. They hate us at this point, and not just in Iraq. It would be nice to give them a reason not to. A show of humanity. A stopping of aggression, because the aggression is now worse than the cure it was designed for. Anyone that cant' see that just isn't trying. Anyone that doesn't care about that has no place in Iraq in the first place, and can't expect to be welcomed or worked with, only rallied against. They think it should stop. We think it should stop. It should stop.

We'd appear far more reasonable if we'd stop, and I think that is the message we should want to send. I think we could use the jump in opinion polls.

40. While they know that we are willing to sacrifice

troops they will have also seen how quickly attitudes toward war have changed. Less then 2000 soldiers have died as a result of the war. To put this in perspective on D-day, in ONE DAY, more then that died. We need to recognize that this is a small number of deaths. You’ve also got to realize that they will see very little difference between a war that is preemptive and a war that is justified. They will see America leaving as it as what it is; a victory for them. Their willpower and actions will have caused a large number of Americans to change their minds. They will not see it is humanity they will see it as weakness.

The dominate attitude in the Middle East will remain as it has regardless of if America leaves or not. They will not understand the reasons for leaving beyond believing that through superior will they have won the fight. It also tells them that their policy is working well.

While there are a number of people who want Americans dead, we also need to remember that there are people in Iraq who are glad that America is there. This can be shown by the growing number of people in the Iraqi police force and the number of people voting. Also some of the attacks are a result of terrorists foreign to Iraq. This effectively makes the resistance look stronger then it is. By leaving we are saying to these people, “The risks you have taken are all for nothing”. I believe, because of the destruction and instability we have caused the people of Iraq that we need to continue so that we can give these people the chance at a better life. If civil war breaks out, as it likely will if we leave, these people will be doomed to oppression.
