Edited on Fri Aug-12-05 01:13 PM by Mr_Spock
Holy smoke it's rising fast! I drove by this morning and regular self-serve at my economy station was $2.44 - I thought that sucks because it was $2.40 last night. I go to get gas on my way home (half day) and it was $2.48 - guy was changing prices as I was filling! I told him "you should just stay out here all day and change the numbers continuously". He said "it's fucking ridiculous isn't it"!! I chuckled.

OPIS the internet/e-mail based oil information service must be earning their keep these days. Keeping all the service stations updated with the latest Rack and Competitor Prices, several times a day.

It is going to continue this direction until at least February, where it may stabilize at ~3.50-4.00/gal.

That is my guess, based on Goldman Sachs prediction of $105/bbl in Jan.

10. I have a full tank thank God
maybe it will come down a bit by late next week or at least quit going up. They said on the radio this morning that it was going up 5 cents today. Then they had a clip of an interview of a lady saying, "People haven't changed their driving habits in the last week. As long as people are willing to pay the new higher prices, that is what they are going to charge" It's so true. They have us over a barrel. We can do some things to cut down driving but you've still got to get where you have to go.

One more thing - we have a new Hummer in the parking lot at work. I CANNOT BELIEVE someone bought a Hummer this week of all weeks!!! UNFU*KING BELIEVABLE

It's not like Americans are driving around in circles just to drive. We have to get to work and buy groceries and we're all stuck in suburban sprawl with no public transportation.

40. You are supposed to yell and scream for
mass transit, light rail and busses for short loops from rail stations.
Or you should sell your suburban house now, and move as close to where you work as possible, and use the car only for required shopping.

And make sure the last car you buy is a hybred or diesel.

I think it may be time to mention buying a bike with pannier bags for light shopping.

14. Kucinich's "Gas Price Spike Act of 2005"
(Thanks dweller)

The problem with this is we import 60% (or more) of our oil. Taxing domestic producers on a fungible commodity will just force them to reduce production or sell overseas. At least he is trying to do something, though.

http://www.commondreams.org/news2005/0811-12.htm

Kucinich’s bill will:

* Institute a windfall profit tax on gasoline and diesel. Such a tax is to be imposed on all industry profits that are above a reasonable profit level. This proposal would not increase the cost of gasoline because this proposal does not tax the price of gasoline. It only taxes excessive profits of refineries and distributors. Any attempt to increase prices to recover the lost revenue in taxes is simply taxed at 100% making the price increase worthless.

* Transfer the revenue from the windfall profits tax to Americans who would buy ultra efficient cars, made in America, with a tax credit. These will be made directly available to the purchaser of a car that traveled over 65 miles on a single gallon of gas. Today average cars get less than 30 miles per gallon.

* Establishes a broad based, far reaching program to promote mass rail transit inter- an intra- city. The bill makes funding available to regional transit authorities to offset significantly reduced mass transit fares during times of gas price spikes.

15. I'm being serious here, don't know enough to know..
but, why is it that, if there are gas stations/oil companies which sell only domestic oil--that the price of a barrel of foreign crude affects those companies prices at the pump?--I mean, other than "because they can" explanation.

I mean, if these domestic companies were making a pile of money, and they were, when gas was selling for $1.25 or even under a dollar, (When Clinton was in office--bought it, at times, for 69 cents.)--while in the hell do they have to raise their prices now. If no foreign oil, then how can price of foreign oil impact their cost of producing gasoline?

It seems to me, the PATRIOTIC thing to do, for these companies would be to continue to sell it for the low price--it seems that such a move would make an impact on OPEC.

Again, I may be ignorant or just naive--that's why I'm asking.

58. What do you "do without" in order to buy gasoline?
How many Euros does the average European bring home every week?
And how many liters do you go through in the course of a week?

Do you spend $448 a month for gasoline? If we had to pay $6.59 a gallon, that's what it would cost me.

At $6.59 a gallon, something would have to go in order to be able to afford to go to work. Telephone? Maybe leave the air conditioner shut off, and forget running fans, those cost money to run, too. Same for heat this winter.
Food? Medicine? Yeah, sure....

Maybe you're thinking "Why don't you just LIVE in your precious car and save the cost of rent, Yank?"

62. Average commuting distance in Holland is much shorter the in the US
And by far most of the cost of petrol in Holland is taxes, which is used for the common good.
People adjust their spending patterns to reoccurring costs such as that of 'filling up the tank'. Many Americans can barely make ends meet, much more so then in Holland (thanks to taxes spend on the common good), so a doubling of the cost of petrol has a severe impact on the budget of many people.

I hope that explains why Americans are complaining.

Not so, here in the land of the corporate crooks where 45 million are without healthcare insurance.

61. ,
At least in Europe most of the cost of fuel is taxes, going into the
general fund, including public healthcare for all citizens.

Not so, here in the land of the corporate crooks where 45 million are without healthcare insurance.

We will be paying high prices for fuel and still NO healthcare plan in sight.

52. I would be happy to see such low prices. I am paying over 2.60 for the
lowest grade, if I am lucky.
