Marine killings in Iraq send new warning sign to Bush 1 hour, 12 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Another day of carnage in Iraq threatened to deal a new blow to brittle public backing for President George W. Bush's handling of the war, as 14 Marines perished in a roadside bombing.

One of the bloodiest single days for US troops in the conflict brought the total of US soldiers killed to 21 in western Iraq since Monday, and the US death toll since the March 2003 invasion to 1,811.

Gunmen meanwhile murdered a US freelance reporter in southern Iraq, and insurgents claimed they had captured another US Marine.

"The violence in recent days in Iraq is a grim reminder of the enemies we face," Bush said after travelling to the town of Grapevine, Texas, on the first full day of his month-long working vacation.

Latest developments were somewhat overshadowed in the US media, fixated on dramatic spacewalks from the Shuttle Discovery and the miraculous escape of more than 300 people in a fiery Air France crash in Toronto.
.......................................

"We are never going to win this thing militarily, that is the bottom line,"

said Lieutenant General John Sattler of the First Marine Expeditionary Force, in a candid conversation in Washington last week.

14. Yeah, what does that Marine general know, anyway?
Miltary expert Rush Limbaugh says the war is going great. That Marine general is obviously a defeatist liberal traitor.

Maybe when he's a Captain General he'll know better than to question America.

9. And we never were going to.
Hello, warmongers in DC! WHY DID YOU NEVER CONSIDER CONSEQUENCES OF WHAT WOULD HAPPEN AFTER YOUR CRAZY SHOCK AND AWE WAVE? Exhibit A, Downing Street Memos. The thoughtful ones were always concerned that not enough attention had been paid to what would happen after the initial attack. And they're being proven prescient, unlike the hawks we're stuck with.

11. The war-mongering, profiteering machine didn't give a damn about "winning"
Why? Cause these bastards are profitting and power-mongering via exploitation of EVERYONE. They always have advocated war-profiteering (for themselves) and they always will.

Now, let's take these bastards to task for their every criminal act, once and for all. Either there will be accountability,...or this abuse will continue.

13. Very good post
drag the war on, and Halliburton gets paid MILLIONS to feed our troops. Just don't ask them how much they're billing the government, because they're not sure. And even if they did know, they ain't telling.

And look at the bright side of running up the deficit. You then have a reason to gut all social programs.

16. They considered the war profits and what it would mean to their
bottom line. That's all this is about, really. When bu$h* was set to rake in his profits from the stadium he forced the taxpayers of Arlington, Tx to pay for, he said that if it goes through he would have more money then he ever dreamed of! Bet he said the same thing about invading Iraq.

12. Well, General, there are a bunch of civilians who were saying the
same thing well BEFORE the war. Civilians who predicted another Vietnam -- same thing only different, that is. Civilians who knew from their study of military history that you can't win a guerilla war unless you commit genocide (as the Europeans did when they came here). Civilians who, familiar with Iraq and that region, didn't see a good, viable or even doable way OUT of Iraq if we were to go in.

Looks like they were right (as many of us here at DU knew they were at the time). However, I will say there are times when being right isn't such a wonderful thing.

Come to think of it, he will be in front of his God Cheney looking for more ways to screw this country.

18. No we are not, and I can't believe that not every single American
knows this to be a fact. I guess some just dont' care as long as they themselves are not subjected to play front man in such a deadly game.
