Another "fighting them over there" quote - from 1621!
I am reading a biography of Count Olivares, adviser to Philip IV of Spain. Discussing the decision by Spain in 1621 to continue to defend its possessions in Flanders from the forces of Protestantism despite the cost, the author says:

"It was also argued that Spain, by fighting the enemy in those distant northern lands, was preserving the Iberian peninsula itself from the miseries of war, although the exact mechanism by which this process operated was never spelt out in detail."

How about that?

And I'd like to know, this is just a rhetorical question, if we're fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here, why the hell does the bush administration try to keep Americans in perpetual fear over here?
