Please donate to Paul Hackett if you can!
Paul Hackett is a Marine that returned from Iraq earlier this year and he is running in Ohio's special election (to be held next week on August 2nd) as a Democrat. The contest has really heated up and the Republicans are running scared, which is why they have decided to dump $285,000 in ads this weekend in Ohio (more here). They are involved in all sorts of dirty tricks, including attempts to Swift Boat his military career. We need more voices like Mr. Hackett's in Congress, so please consider donating to his campaign today! You can do so here:

4. "...I saw how high the price really was."
His position on the Environment from his website, http://www.hackettforcongress.com/ . Note the last line:
Environment

Americans account for about 4.5% of the world’s population, yet we consume 25% of the world’s energy resources.

Our consumption affects the environment when fuels are mined and burned, and long after. It’s only right that we assume a measure of responsibility for the nation’s—and the global—environment. More than that, it’s appropriate that we assume a leadership role.

That means our government must be more forward-looking and honest with us when it comes to environmental issues and policy. The present administration has a dismal record in this area and is undoing much of the progress we’ve made in recent years. They’ve done little to dispel the accusation that they care more about big oil companies than the world we’re leaving our children.

Manufacturers and consumers must be encouraged to develop and use energy-saving technologies. Even the smallest advances and conservation measures can go such a long way.

In 2000 the first hybrid cars hit the American road. I put my money where my mouth is and bought a hybrid that got over 65 mpg. I drive a larger model hybrid now that I have three kids. I still average better than 50mpg. Now hybrids are made in the States, and yes they even make an SUV hybrid!

A few years back I made another painless sacrifice. I replaced all the light bulbs in my house with compact fluorescent bulbs. My electricity savings were dramatic, and now I’m not so annoyed when I come home to my kids playing outside after leaving the lights on in the basement.

You don’t have to be a tree-hugger to conserve energy. American ingenuity has put men on the moon. There’s no doubt we can develop cost-effective alternatives that will reduce or eliminate our dependence on foreign oil. It’s the right thing to do. We just need the will to do it.

A few months back, when the gas topped out at $2.40 or $2.50, I didn’t pay that price. I was in Iraq. I saw how high the price really was.

I donated via actblue.com:
http://actblue.com/list/hackett

I sent 25.01. I also contacted him with a personal message of support at his website....and got this personalized reply - these guys are on the ball!

25. Yoda might say:
"With Rs it is always what cannot be done."

Hackett pointed to Apollo as an example of what we can do. You might remember that the Rs were against that project because the Soviets had already beaten us in the space race. Nixon wanted to forget about rockets and concentrate on consumer electronics.

9. his Position on Social Security
http://hackettforcongress.com/index.php?page=display&id=66
Social Security

Social Security is a promise made to us by our government: If you work hard, you’ll have enough to get by when you retire. I don’t break my promises, and I expect the same from my government.

The administration has manufactured a crisis because it doesn’t believe the government should offer citizens this kind of insurance policy. The administration would prefer we treat social security as a money making investment account with all the risks that go along with such investments as opposed to what it is; an insurance policy. Just like car insurance when you pay the premiums you know and expect it will be there when you need it. We don't treat our car insurance like an opportunity to make money we shouldn't treat social security insurance that way either.

Social Security is not broken, but it can be improved and secured. There are far too many complicated solutions floating around. Let’s focus on some simple ones.

First, Social Security is NOT a slush fund. The money put into Social Security from your paycheck should be used only for Social Security benefits. Treat it like your Christmas savings account: Don’t tap into it throughout the year to pay for other stuff.

Second, instead of capping Social Security taxes at $90,000 of income, let’s kick that number up to $150,000. (I’d like to take credit for the idea, but Warren Buffet thought of it first.) This simple step would eliminate much of the Social Security shortfall.

I for one would be paying more in Social Security taxes, but I’d be happy to. Why? Because we’ve all made a commitment to pass on a better America to our children. Our parents kept their word to us, and we have the same obligation. This pledge is a cornerstone of the American way of life. Those of us who have enjoyed success have a duty to uphold this commitment to our future generations.

10. Healthcare
http://hackettforcongress.com/index.php?page=display&id=68
Healthcare

America has the finest healthcare in the world. Unfortunately, far too few people have access to it. In fact, America ranks an embarrassing 17th of the 33 developed nations in life expectancy.

There is no reason why all Americans should not have affordable access to quality healthcare.

Health insurance premiums are rising at 4 times the rate of inflation. These outrageous premiums are not only too costly for individuals and small businesses, they’ve grown too burdensome for large employers. GM recently laid off 8% of its work force because it was paying more per car produced on healthcare premiums than on steel.

The health insurance industry is riddled with inefficiencies, excessive administrative expenses, inflated prices, poor management, inappropriate care, waste, and fraud. That’s not just hurting healthcare consumers and companies that offer healthcare benefits. It’s also driving good doctors out of business.

Other developed countries pay between 9% and 11% of their G.D.P. on healthcare. America spends 15.3%, and the costs are rising every year at a rate much higher than inflation. The situation is dire.

I don’t have a standard health insurance policy but a Medical Savings Account with a catastrophic health insurance component with a $5,000 deductible. With three small children, some years that gets a little hard to swallow, even though I make a very good living. I pay taxes to see that my neighbors and I get the things we need. Is it too much to expect that some of our tax dollars be allocated towards a fair system that provides affordable healthcare coverage to all Americans?

I’m not suggesting we pay more taxes, just that they get spent on what’s really important. Our government should be more concerned about preserving the health of our people than protecting the profits of the health insurance industry and other powerful interests.

11. War in Iraq
Edited on Thu Jul-28-05 11:37 AM by Tommymac
http://hackettforcongress.com/index.php?page=display&id=69
War in Iraq
If elected, I will be the only member of Congress to have served in Iraq. I fought in the Fallujah campaign, took part in reconstruction efforts, and worked side-by-side with Iraqi military and civil personnel. I know what’s really happening in Iraq.

The White House has been painting a rosy picture and people aren’t buying it anymore. We all know the outcome is uncertain and there is no exit date. But even now, too many conservatives just want to applaud whatever the administration does. And too many liberals who opposed the war want to see the president’s Iraq policy fail.

I was against the war. It was a misuse of our military that damaged our credibility throughout the world and squandered our political capital. Still, I volunteered to serve, and I have no regrets. But now we need to face the reality of the situation there. Our country has gone to war and every American must share in that responsibility.

The good news is we can successfully exit Iraq once the roughly 140,000 Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) are adequately trained and skilled enough to defend their fledgling government.

The bad news is they are nowhere near the level of skill to accomplish that mission and are likely years away from that goal.

I know this from fighting alongside Iraqis, and training them. They are simply not ready to defend their country against the insurgents that threaten to destroy Iraq’s future.

No matter what your position on the war, if we pull out now the entire region will spiral into chaos and present our nation and military with a far more difficult challenge than we currently face. I don’t relish the prospect of my two sons going over there in twenty years. We need to get it right, and we need to do it now.

The Iraqi people and government are grateful that we eliminated their brutal dictator. They are capable of running their own government and building a democracy. It won’t look like ours; nor should it. But in order for them to succeed, we must not withdraw our troops before the Iraqis are ready to stand on their own.

Probably the most controversial of his positions - I personally am against the war...but I would rather have someone like him in there who has been there to fight to get us out as soon as possible. He will not be one to continue to send our servicemen over there without the proper gear, support or for an indefinate time. I'll reluctantly give him a pass on this ...

17. I do it to show support for Grassroots Dems...
I started to do it this spring when I heard others were doing it when sending in donations to the DNC to show we were supporting Howard Dean, not the DLC. In fact, whenever the DLC or MSM disses Howard.

The penny indicates it comes from a grassroots supporter.

19. Economy
http://hackettforcongress.com/index.php?page=display&id=67

America gives us all the opportunity to be successful and small businesses are the lifeblood of American ingenuity. More than half of our work force is employed by companies of five hundred or fewer workers. That's why I believe we should redirect the tax break and financial incentives going to big corporations to our small businesses.

Giving a boost to small businesses is denounced as “big government.” But when a huge oil company receives a taxpayer subsidy, it’s hailed as “good government” and “growing the economy.” That’s Un-American. That’s wrong.

I’m a small-business owner. I have five employees. When Hackett Law Offices has a bad month, we don’t fire half the staff and then get a handout from the government for doing it.

Yet that’s exactly what’s happening with American corporations. The government is offering financial incentives to corporations for outsourcing our jobs overseas.

Those are our tax dollars. They should benefit us, the American taxpayers. They shouldn’t be funneled to some large corporation with an American name and an offshore bank account that is relocating thousands of jobs a hemisphere away.

Outsourcing our country’s intellectual and technological wealth not only puts our economy at risk, but also our national security. An example of this dangerous practice is the partnership the United States has with Egypt to build M1A1 battle tanks. It’s bad for jobs. It’s bad for national security. It’s bad for the economy.

What’s more, government funding for scientific research is declining for the first time in years. So while big business is enjoying bigger and bigger tax breaks, we’re stunting the growth of American innovation. That’s also bad government, and bad leadership.

It’s time to re-examine our priorities and remember just what it is that makes America great.

Iraq war veteran in uphill fight for U.S. Congress

By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent
WEST UNION, Ohio (Reuters) - Five months after leaving the battle zones of Iraq, Democrat Paul Hackett is waging an uphill fight to make political history in a special election for the U.S. Congress next week.

Hackett, a major in the Marine reserves who served in hot spots like Ramadi and Fallujah, hopes to become the first Iraq war veteran in Congress and the first Democrat to win the heavily Republican 2nd House of Representatives District in southwestern Ohio in more than 30 years.

He is up against tough odds, however, in Tuesday's election to replace Republican Rob Portman, who resigned to become U.S. trade representative. Hackett faces a well-known former state legislator, Jean Schmidt, in a conservative district where Portman regularly rolled up more than 70 percent of the vote.

But his military experience and tough attacks on President Bush's conduct of the war have energized a short seven-week campaign that otherwise would have been a sleepwalk.

Hackett has criticized Bush's decision to invade Iraq and backs intensified training for Iraqi security forces by pairing them with U.S. troops. He condemns Bush's failure to ask Americans at home to share the burdens of war, complaining about politicians who "use the war to wrap themselves in the American flag."

"You can't fight three wars, support the troops and have a tax cut. It's irrational," he said in an interview, calling the administration's approach "patriotism light." Prolonged engagements in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Balkans have strained the economy and military, he said, and "the only people sacrificing are the ones over there."

43. Wes Clark endorsed Paul Hackett two days ago
I am writing to ask you to support a tremendous public servant and fellow veteran Paul Hackett in Tuesday's special election for the 2nd Congressional District of Ohio.

Paul Hackett is exactly the kind of strong leader we need in these challenging times. He is a former Marine and a veteran of the Fallujah campaign in Iraq. He understands what it will take to fight -- and win -- the war on terror and keep America safe.

He also understands that our nation's greatest strength is found in the talent and diversity of our people. That is why Paul believes it is so important to invest in health care and in our schools, and to use our tax dollars responsibly by ending corporate welfare and supporting small businesses.

Above all, Paul offers the kind of fresh, pragmatic leadership that we desperately need in Washington. For all of their bravado, the Bush administration and Republicans in Congress seem fresh out of ideas about how to win the war in Iraq and bring our troops home. As a Civil Affairs officer in Iraq, Paul helped to rebuild Iraq and reach out to the Iraqi people. His experience and judgment are exactly what we need to finish the job we started in Iraq.

Paul Hackett is running in a special election that will take place on August 2nd. Because turnout for special elections is often low, it is absolutely critical to do everything we can to help Paul's supporters get to the polls next Tuesday.

In a close election like this one, every person can make a difference. With just one week until election day, here are two things you can do to help Paul win on Tuesday:

1. If you can get to Cincinnati, please volunteer to help PaulÕs campaign by making phone calls or knocking on doors. Help his team get out the vote on August 2nd.

2. Donate to his campaign. Make sure Paul and his campaign have the resources he needs to reach out to each and every single voter.

Today, the Cincinnati Post endorsed Paul, calling him "a gust of fresh air." Clearly, momentum is on our side. We can win this race, but to do it we need your help.

Paul Hackett has the experience and good judgment we need in Congress. Please do what you can to help Paul win Ohio's 2nd Congressional District next Tuesday.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Wes Clark

(I've made two contributions and added $.04 for four-star General Wes Clark.)

49. E-Mail A Veteran You Know
... who isn't already hip to the truth about this administration. Start a chain going. Here's the intro to the e-mail I sent to my Dad, who's a big fan of these e-mail chains. Feel free to rip it off/modify it as needed, and send it along with the "swift boats" link above.

When I saw this, I thought of you. Remember what I said about how it was horrible that the Republicans attacked Gore for his service in Vietnam, and then attacked Kerry for his service in Vietnam, and that this would lead to smears against every veteran who runs for office, so long as he's a Democrat?

Well, it turns out that, sadly, I was right. There is no length to which Republicans won't sink in order to maintain their stranglehold on political power for their fat cat campaign contributors. The story below concerns Paul Hackett, Major, USMC (Ret.), who, if elected, would be the first Iraq War veteran elected to Congress. Hackett was a civil affairs officer in Iraq. Republicans are attacking him for "claiming to have led troops in combat," when he made no such claim. Once again, they are attacking the veteran who is running against a candidate (in this case, a woman whose main credential is as a "pro-life" activist) with no military service.

When is enough enough? America's veterans did not unite in denouncing the Republican attacks on Gore's military record, and they did not unite in denouncing the Republican attacks on Kerry's military record. Why should military service automatically preclude one from running for public office? Write your congressman, your senator, the President, write Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Mehlman asking them to condemn these unfair attacks on Paul Hackett.

How many generations of servicemen have to go through this at the hands of the effete, Chardonnay-sipping, anti-military Republican elite?

If you AGREE, PASS IT ON, if you don't, hit delete.

53. This I Have Done
I've made a modest contribution to Paul Hackett's campaign already.

Even if he loses, I think that Paul Hackett will do the Radical Right/Republican Party some damage. Surely there are current and ex-military people who are beginning to get fed up with the right wing's tactic of "swift-boating" any opposing military veteran's career and character.

During the early 1970's, the Radical Right succeeded in saddling progressives with the stereotype of the spitting leftist who abused returning veterans as they came home from Southeast Asia. Today, we see radical rightists "swift-boating" returning US military veterans who decide to run for political office. Surely progressives can tie this bit of stinking six day-old carrion around the Radical Right's necks for the next twenty years.

87. Paul is up...
...to over $300,000, more than what the GOP kicked in just recently to Schmidt's campaign. And it'll be ten bucks bigger than that when I mail off a check tomorrow.

If and when Schmidt loses this election, the GOP won't give her the time of day and she won't be able to run for county dogcatcher.

It's negative campaigns like this that truly reveal (to those of us who are blessed with a discriminating intellect and powers of objectivity) the twisted thinking of the GOP and its lemmings. Hackett is such a threat to the Far Right, even though he's running for an obscure little Congressional spot in an obscure little district in Ohio, that they're actually starting to say that if you served in Iraq or anywhere else and then decide to run for public office, you're unpatriotic, opportunistic and hypocritical.

Now, boys and girls, let's define "hypocritical"...

86. Hackett's stance on the Iraq war is no different to Bush's
It's hardly meaningful to go around complaining that the war is bad yet now we must fight it.

And particularly not when one has *volunteered* to fight in a war he claims to have opposed. That's asinine. It's one thing to be press-ganged into service in Iraq, as so shamefully the National Guard was. It's quite another to go willingly. He's even bragging about having volunteered to storm Fallujah!

What a quisling; not a penny shall he get from me. I will not legitimize the war in any fashion, particularly not by supporting pols who simply do Bushism's bidding under a different brand name.
