Do you know any people under 30 who oppose gay marriages?
Edited on Thu Jul-21-05 12:54 AM by bluestateguy
I only know of one or two (I'm 29). I know some pretty conservative people who voted for Bush and support the war, but have no problem at all with gay marriages. I tend to think that in 20 or 30 years we'll look back on this era with ridicule for its homophobia. Generational change has a way of eroding bigotry in ways that new legislation and sensitivity training workshops cannot. It seems to me that once today's younger generation (Generation Y and the latter half of Generation X) enters into positions of power, we'll start to see the laws change.

1. Not a one
In Canada the phrase is 'in 5 years we'll look back on this and wonder what all the fuss was about'

Although I would suggest to you that we are looong since into Generation Z, and restarting the entire alphabet.

Clinton and Bush are boomers after all.

3. Yes.
But I live in a red state, so it doesn't count.

Seriously, I know several. Mostly young girls in their early 20s.

11. Nope
They're all faux Christians, too.

Oh, they speak a good game, but then they slip about how they drink or are not virgins or something that doesn't fit the little facade they present as "perfect."

You know the type.

4. Unfortunately yes
I'm 31, BTW.
I would say the vast majority of people under 30 are fairly neutral on the issue or support gay marriage, but at least in this state I know an awful lot of under-30s (almost all male) who are against it.

5. I'm 21 and I know a few
I do believe polls have shown that the younger generation tends to have less of a problem with gay marriage than other age groups.

6. Oh yes
And I hang out in liberal circles. Most of my friends are for gay marriage, but I know quite a lot of people who aren't. I haven't thought about percentages, but your assumption may be a little too optimistic.

9. Unfortunately, quite a few...
In my Social Justice class, at least 20 expressed vehement opposition to the idea, but when challenged would say..."the bible says it's a sin" (not my bible, but you could drive yourself crazy arguing with fundies). Granted, my school is not the Ivy League, but it really creeps me out how many of them there are on campus. :hi:

*My professor's reply to them was always "If I have to suffer through marriage, gay people should too"

It's sad. You know gay people are human beings and tax payers I really dont understand why they shouldnt be treated as everyone else. Am I missing the boat here?

13. I know quite a few
I'm 29, and know quite a few -- I'm in a red state.

That being said, not a single one I know opposes civil unions that would provide all rights to homosexuals (inheritance, healthcare, social security benefits, gaurdianship, etc.), but one mention of marriage and they run for the hills.

12. We Know Anecdotally And Statistically
younger folks are much more tolerant of alternate sexual arrangements....

This is what scares the fundies more than anything...

That they are on the wrong side of history...

14. I teach, and while I don't discuss gay marriage in my math classes
One of my student groups took a survey of gay issues for his project for my advanced functions and modeling class. Sadly there was quite a bit of opposition expressed to same sex marriage. On a scale of 1 to 7 with 1 being strongly opposed the mean was less than 3. But I teach in a very rural school in eastern NC.

15. I don't know many people under 30,
but of those I do, they all either support gay marriage or I don't know how they feel because we have never discussed it. Since I'm gay, I suppose those who are opposed would never say so to my face, if they were trying to be polite.

16. If you legalize gay marriage, everyone will suddenly turn gay.
It's a disease, that homosexuality. We need to quarantine it.

Fucking ignorant morans.
