Bush nominated a conservative. SHOCKING!
So Bush - a conservative President - nominated a conservative to a conservative majority Congress.

Now I know we want to fight every battle and all, but exactly how moderate a nominee does anyone think we're going to get if we even COULD defeat this one?

1. There is a BIG difference between an honest to goodness conservative
and the long list of right wing activist that bush and company continues to push onto the american people. this person is far, far right and not a true conservative. That term is suppose to mean a person who espouses individual liberties, Barry Goldwater comes to mind as a true conservative.

2. Goldwater was decades ago. Face it, this is the party today. And the
question remains, how moderate do you think we're going to get from this administration?

I'd really like to know what the standard is for what we'll accept.

4. Well I can speak for this Dem and female and say not this. I have little
or no power but I know this is wrong and I will do whatever I can to prevent it from happening.

3. So you want to give up women's rights, civil rights, and
environmental protections? And just call it another day?

I think we owe our kids and grandkids more than that.

Like I said: lead, follow the GOP, or get out of the way.

6. No, I don't WANT to give up any of those things. But I'm asking how
moderate a candidate we'll have to get before DU says okay.

Is that an unfair question?

7. Why should we say okay?
What fucking whit of good does it do? Why the rush to appease Bush and his 51% "man-date"?

13. What does an alternative get us?
If filibustering this nominee gets us more than it costs I'm onboard.

5. Um, one that isn't going to overturn Roe, Griswold and Lawrence...
would be a fucking good place to start.

If they are going to overturn those decisions, then- fuck no, we SHOULD oppose him (or her)..what the hell do we have to lose?

11. Thank you - I appreciate your answer.
But what that leaves us with is a moderate to moderate-left candidate. And I don't see how we'll get that, given the numbers.

What we have to lose is a good question. And what I wonder is what filibustering this nominee will get us - will it get us a more liberal nominee? Will it get us more traction on opposing Bush? Will it get us ANYTHING?

15. Let's find out where he stands.
He's not Roy Moore, but I think there is cause to be concerned where civil liberties, reproductive rights and privacy issues are involved. I'll wait for the hearings. I'm, personally not saying filibuster the guy, yet- but I think we deserve honest answers on things like whether or not American citizens, for example, should have the right to use birth control without fear of arrest.

19. I agree. I think the questioning should be vigorous and thorough.
But I think if our position becomes FILIBUSTER ANYONE WHO'S NOT ON OUR SIDE we're not going to get far.

20. No, but you need to understand that reproductive choice, specifically
overturning Roe v. Wade, is a DEAL BREAKER for lots of people in this party.

in - and we don't have the upper hand. :-(

24. Okay, but if that's the thing that is bringing many of our people to the
polls, don't be surprised when they give the big electoral finger to members of our party who sell them down the river on it.

8. Does it mean we should just roll over and give up?!
HELL FUCKING NO!

If you have any principles, you would fight to the end.

This is not a small little political job that lasts four years. This is a decision that affects the next thirty years of your life, and your kids' lives.

25. You have twisted logic.
NO WAY should we support someone we strongly oppose. Talking MSM heads bitch about us not having any principles or ideas. Well, this is the time to distinguish ourselves from the repugs.

10. Not shocking. Expected.
I thought we all expected a fight on this.

Do we suddenly have other plans or something?

14. So what battles, exactly, are we Democrats going to fight?
????

I mean a few months ago people were advocating that the Democrats should filibuster Gonzales (who will only be around for a few years as Attorney General), and now this website is full of defeatist attitudes about a decision that could significantly effect this country for the next two or three decades. I don't get it. I think we lost this fight back in November, but I don't know what the Democrats in the Senate have left to lose at this point. I expect them to try to do something about this horrid nominee whose views are in line only with a fringe slice of American society.

17. I think that's the question. We are the minority party and we have
limited resources.

What should we fight is precisely the question I'm asking - HOW moderate does the canndidate have to be?
