What the Administration didn't count on with Treason-gate: Losing the war!
Wilson's Niger trip was the turning point where the cat was let out of the bag for the first time about their plan to trump up WMD claims in Iraq. Thats why the Administration tried so hard to snuff out the story and send a message to other reporters about writing similar articles as Wilson did. Until then no one was questioning if the Bush administration had been trumping up their claims about WMD's in Iraq. They thought they could intimidate Wilson but it appears they messed with the wrong guy. Wilson's claim did just enough damage, that a few people did start to question the Administrations WMD claims.

Buy taking the chance of messing with a CIA agents identity (a big risk) they were counting on winning the war in two weeks having their Mission Accomplished party, finding a handful of WMD's in Iraq (just enough for them to claim they were right to attack Iraq and diminishing Wilson's claim)leaving them looking like hero's in the eyes of 80% of the country and then no one would have been able to touch them. If anyone brought up Wilson then all they would have to say is that Rove was trying to prevent Wilson from feeding false information to the country (the same attack they are using now) ONLY the problem now is that the war is going badly, Bush's approval is in the danger zone and their were NO WMD's found in Iraq making Wilson's story look like he was right ON! Which he was!

Often Politics can snuff out even something as serious as outing a CIA agent because had we won the war the public would not have stood for anyone from the "HERO" administration going to jail. Not when they saved us from all the WMD's in Iraq and got rid of Saddam Husein. The investigation would have NEVER got off the ground.

The Administrations problem is that they were wrong about everything!!!! Now their crimes stand out like a blinking neon light!
The country is on to them and so is the Grand Jury.

1. You hit the nail on the head
No one would have a word to say if the war had gone according to plan.

8. I stand corrected
It was a pipe dream. Cheney said we would be greeted with flowers and sweets. One of the many pipe dreams.

3. BINGO!!
They figured they were going to get away with it because they felt invincible.

The investigation is coming to a head at the worst possible time for them.

Great analysis why the doom and gloom scenarios (Admin will get away with it as they always do) won't play out.

You are absolutely right. They thought they would have this whole thing wrapped up in a few weeks and BushCo could assume its role as the Supreme Planetary Ruler.

They figured wrong.

And I bet their smug hubris left them open to stupid mistakes, that Mr Fitzgerald is ferreting out as we type these words.

5. that is SO reality-based thinking
we WON the war, don't you know . . .

Seriously, they've been WRONG about everything, except the part where they all get stinking rich. And the part where the own the office that can pardon them all.

Remember Iran-Contra and the first bushturd?

7. You're right. Bush was making two bets in Iraq...
1. That the war would be won, and quickly.

2. That he would find some WMD in Iraq.

He lost both bets.
