Iran and Iraq to sign military deal

Thursday 07 July 2005, 13:10 Makka Time, 10:10 GMT

Former foes Iran and Iraq have said they will sign a military cooperation agreement that will include Iranian help in training Iraq's armed forces.

The agreement marks a considerable advance in relations between the two countries that fought a bitter 1980-1988 war and comes despite repeated US accusations that Iran has undermined security in Iraq since the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

"It's a new chapter in our relations with Iraq. We will start wide defence cooperation," Iranian Defence Minister Admiral Ali Shamkhani told a joint news conference with visiting Iraqi counterpart Sadoun al-Dulaimi.

"We're going to form some committees which will be involved in mine clearance, identifying those missing from the war and also ... to help train, rebuild and modernise the Iraqi army," Shamkhani added.

Iran last year offered to train Iraqi border guards, but Baghdad declined the offer.

Meddling accusation

US and Iraqi officials have often accused Iran of stirring up instability in Iraq. Tehran denies meddling in Iraq or helping, arming or letting foreign fighters cross its borders.

Asked about possible US opposition to Iran-Iraq military cooperation, Shamkhani said: "No one can prevent us from reaching an agreement."

Iraq's al-Dulaimi echoed Shamkhani's comments.

"Nobody can dictate to Iraq its relations with other countries," he said.

1. Oh yeah, Ma and Pa Red State Christ-o-freak are just gonna
love the idea of us losing 1800 soldiers (so far), and spending Billions (that's Billions) of dollars in order to make Iraq a military ally to Iran. I think that this may just be the crowning achievement of the Bush administration - the uniting of Iran and Iraq! Way to go, boys!!! :hi:

7. No, no, it's great
In spite of posting it, I then had to link to it a dozen times when people said "do the bombings mean war with Iran?" Unfortunately a good many worthwhile posts don't get read on here...the number of posts tends to bury valuable info quickly. Post it every day from now on..it's good news, make sure people know.

4. Nevertheless, this could provide an initial foundation for an exit,...
,...strategy. This situation may even encourage greater international involvement to stabilize both the economy and security in Iraq. On the other hand, ;( if the BushCo/neoCON cabal continue to stir shit up over there, they could place our soldiers in a seriously horrific spot.

9. If they can reach a similar agreement with Syria
and the Kurds are protected, then yes - it would be time for the US to go.

6. Was something overlooked in the 97 edicts handed down
by Bremer? The puppet must surely obey it's master with respect to alliances.

8. Well, it is a democracy afterall.

Isn't that the prerogative of a free country? Don't they get to decide who they wish to form alliances with?

No big surprise to me. The invasion/occupation of secular Iraq was going to set into motion a whole new opportunity to facilitate the potential of a pan-Islamic state, a new Islamic Caliphate for the 21st century. We should have encouraged the existing secular state of Iraq by building up the infrastructure while maintaining close inspections on their WMD capabilities. Instead, the PNAC braintrust decided to destroy the basis of Arab secular moderation in the Mid-East.

How can we now dictate what the Iraqi democracy can and can't do with regards to their regional security? The neocons were played quite well by Chalabi, I think.

14. All that's gonna do is make them bust out the "nuke 'em all" shit.
Ma and Pa red state don't give a fuck about WHY Iran is allying with Iraq, they just care THAT they are.

You can tell them till you are blue in the face about the fact that all the chimp is doing by waging his oil war is uniting the shiite and sunnite factions in the middle east, and giving once deep adversaries a common enemy to team up against, and all you will get is a blank stare back.

All the neo-cons care about is that brown people are on our oil, and they want them removed.
