Supreme Court Justice Rudy Giuliani?
I know: about as appealing as a steel ruler scraped across a blackboard. He may not be *'s choice for SCOTUS vacancy No. 1 or even No. 2, but he is a lawyer and was US Attorney for the Southern District in NY, so he has some qualifications.

Negatives include his pro-choice and somewhat pro-gay stands as well as ethnicity, family background, and loyalty (he did endorse Mario Cuomo against George Pataki what seems like an eternity ago).

So should Justice Rudy be saved for a more appropriate occasion, like Halloween, or is he conceivably on *'s short list as a potential "compromise" candidate for the Democrats?

2. as much of an asshole i think Giuliani is...
I think he would be a decent SCOTUS judge and it would keep him the fuck out of politics. But there isn't a chance in hell that bush would appoint him IMO.

3. If the Right was to have a coronary over Gonzales...
They would lash out violently at Guiliani.

He's way too liberal on social issues.

14. Not even for the third of three vacancies?
I know those lunatics want it all and don't want any compromise whatsoever, but after all the venom spewed during the first two confirmations they may ease up. Even rabid dogs lie down awhile, but yes, they have more sense.

5. As far as the Far Right is concerned, Giuliani may as well be Barney Frank
I think the guy is an asshole, but he's moderate compared to their usual ultra-right freak show. I'd take Rudi over Rehnquist any old day.

12. If you want to connect 9/11, Rudy, and London, read this book
Crossing the Rubicon, by Michael Ruppert. See <www.fromthewilderness.com > for more info.

7. Now that it seems true that Rehnquist will retire, I (we) could hope
for a compromise appointee like Giuliani... But we must not let Scalia become chief Justice... He is a ideologue of the worst kind, how he could have practiced law or be an objective judge, EVER, is beyond me...

9. Well, I don't think Scalia can be stopped from rising to chief justice
But remember that when it comes to voting in decisions, his vote carries the same weight as his eight associates. I'm sure there are DUers who know more about the inner workings of SCOTUS than I do, but I think the chief justice is more of a first among equals than a bullying dictator who can lean on justices to curry and exchange favors with them.

There have been bad chief justices in American history, such as Roger Taney (the Dred Scott decision and others, I think), but I think legal scholars would be hard pressed to find a similar time in the history of the court where so many justices will likely be replaced during one president's administration. And of course it just happens to be this particular president who came into office with, uh, somewhat less than a mandate.

11. I don't like him but I'd accept him
I think the chances of his being the nominee are about zilcho though.

13. Gee, one of the few times I'm hoping for a miracle, and it has to be
Supreme Court Justice Giuliani? Time for a drink.

Make that a double. I'm old enough to remember when Mario Cuomo's name was being tossed about for that office. Where's the scream room around here? I need to scream.
