The fine, upstanding "heroic" cadre of today's Republican college students, have big mouths and lots of hatred. Too bad their "intellect" and "courage" doesn't match their rhetoric.

I'm talking about impressionable young people who are totally clueless. They've learned to hate minorities, immigrants, gays, liberals, "wine sipping cheese eaters", the French, New York, Ted Kennedy, Howard Dean, and yes, you and me.

You'd think they'd be tripping over each other to get to the recruitment office to fight against Saddam (or was it Osama and other "non-Christian-towel-heads?").

How did we get to this point in this country? I feel like ET trying to call home, but I don't know the number.

I don't get it. Has any of them ever hidden in a bathroom for three days to assassinate a shogun? Or do they just enjoy hiding in other people's bathrooms?

It's funny - the stereotype we have of students in the UK is of annoying, unkempt, naive lefties who read half of Das Kapital and think they can solve all the world's problems. The stereotype of American students, on the other hand, is guys called "Chet" who drink beer straight out of the keg while chanting "chug-a-lug" for some reason best known to themselves.

I don't know if you've been here during the Bush years, but, hey, come on over and give it a try.

My guess is you'll be on the next plane out. And I might just be sitting next to you. Right now, America really sucks.

When I was the age of those college students of which I'm speaking, I might have felt the same way (although I really don't believe I was ever THAT stupid). But at some point, even religious fanatics and morons must stop looking "...through a glass darkly" and recognize that we're on the road to self-destruction ... if not worse.

I spend a lot of time on DU, and a lot of time trying to make my friends realise just quite how much it truly, truly must suck to live in America at the moment. I'm not sure they get it... but I'm sure that, if they ever got stalked by an army recruiter, or got refused contraception by some nutjob chemist, or had to stop for "prayer time" at work, they'd have a little more empathy...
