3. Conason says right is no longer what it used to be. They practice
phony capitalism. They use tax revenue to make their cronies rich. And, look at the Patriot Act, they're no longer friends of freedom.

The interviewer says McCarthy et al weren't exactly friends of freedom and the little guy. Conason says, well, that's the Cold War. It's really fiscal conservativism that is no longer the sine qua non of a conservative. They've gone 180 degrees from that.

On the propaganda, Conason says the right wing has a huge megaphone now. It's an enormous machine.

The most common lies are the denigration of liberals -- immoral, untrustworthy, poor managers of the economy. Conason says these are actually the qualities they have. It's hypocrisy. (I say, the RW always accuses the left of what they're guilty.)

Why do they hate Clinton? Because they are great money raisers, and because of the symbolism -- professional woman.

What about economic issues?

4. The economy:
the truth is catching up. No jobs, and debts, will screw America up badly.

Says W is more like Reagan than his own father -- the fiscal imprudence, and adherence to supply side economics.

What about Ann Coulter's super harsh epithets, like calling Hillary a prostitute on national TV. Conasaon says, yeah, I was there when she said it.

Says it happens because the mainstream press doesn't discipline them when they go over the line, and because there's no balance with a left wing press. Says they do it as a joke. The go around to shows and see how far they can push it and they think it's funny.

Limbaugh? Interviewers can't believe that people in SF listen to Rush and put his bumper stickers on his car. Conason says Savage is the one he can't believe has an audience. Conason says boycotts can be successful. Savage is a race hater, etc., and that should be good grounds for a boycott.

So, is there an audience for this stuff?

8. If there were more choices on left, people would turn away from
RW propaganda.

Conason says that the Republicans running Arnold suggests that they know that their version of RW far right America doesn't have broad appeal. The few RW fortresses in CA need to be appeased, but it's a small % of voters.

And how 'bout the hypocrisy? Chickenhawks? (Rumsfield was the only one who served, and it wasn't during war time.)

Joe says the problem is when they criticize others for not being patriotic while they send others out to die, They never served.

Rangel was a decorated hero (silver star for saving his men) in Korea. Daschle was air force vetran. Harkin was a navy pilot for five years. They have earned the right to criticize.

7. I saw Conason at Cody's on Saturday night. Seemed like a nice guy --
but his spiel was not particularly good. I was sort of disappointed, relative to what I've read from him.
