Graduation crowd boos Schwarzenegger
Edited on Wed Jun-15-05 02:06 PM by Goldmund
SANTA MONICA, California (AP) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's return to his alma mater turned into an exercise in perseverance when virtually his every word was accompanied by catcalls, howls and piercing whistles from the crowd.

Schwarzenegger's face appeared to redden during his 15-minute commencement address Tuesday to 600 graduates at Santa Monica College, but he ignored the shouting as he recalled his days as a student and, later, his work as a bodybuilder and actor.

"Always go all out and overcome your fears," he told the graduates. "Work, work, work. Study, study, study."

Inside the stadium, the drone from hundreds of rowdy protesters threatened to drown out the governor's voice at times. Many in the crowd erupted in boos when a police officer pulled down a banner criticizing the estimated $45 million cost of the November 8 special election that Schwarzenegger proposed Monday.

2. Good to hear
Why the hell is he having a "special" election? Isn't he up next year?
Has California or any other state done this before?

7. If I remember correctly...
special elections have been called by three other governors, including Ronald Reagan.

This special election's sole purpose is to cripple public employees and their unions -- to silence them so he can implement his privatization plans and consolidate power into the governor's office.

16. Not the sole purpose...
There will be three referendums on the "special" election ballot, the most alarming of which is Arnold's initiative to "reform" the manner in which California's legislative districts are drawn. Says Nancy Pelosi on this issue:

June 13, 2005

Pelosi Statement on California Special Election

Washington, D.C. House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on Governor Schwarzenegger's call for a special election in November that would cost California more than $80 million:

"Governor Schwarzenegger's special election is unnecessary, fiscally unsound, and unpopular among Californians. The same people who brought you the illegal and unconstitutional redistricting in Texas are moving to California to work on the governor's redistricting initiative.

"It is unfathomable that while the state is in a financial crisis the governor would spend $80 million on a special election to redistrict California, and potentially millions more to redraw congressional district lines in the middle of decade. These critical dollars would be better spent to meet the needs of Californias families by creating jobs, improving education and making college more affordable, increasing access to health care, protecting the environment, and ensuring the state is secure."

3. "Steroids, steroids, steroids," he told the graduates
"It may not work for you," he said, "but in exchange for shrivelled manhood I got these huge muscles and a whole career making male-oriented violence-fantasy flicks with my shirt off."

8. My point was, why does it say 'he returned to his ALMA MATER'
... when SMC is very obviously NOT his alma mater - and then the article even goes on to say as much ....

11. Got his Bachelor's through CORRESPONDENCE courses
Edited on Wed Jun-15-05 02:17 PM by nikraye
Ahnuld spent FOUR years (70-74) taking general studies classes at the TWO-year Santa Monica junior college, then took correspondence courses to complete a bachelors in 1979 at U-Wisconsin Superior. In all, it took him NINE years to finish a FOUR year degree. Not a very ambitious student. And with this minimal correspondence degree, he's elected governor of one of the largest, wealthiest states in this country. Just goes to show, when it comes to winning major political office, it's the money honey, not the brains, that count.

added on edit:

"Schwarzenegger took general studies classes at the two-year community college between 1970 and 1974. He later took correspondence courses through the University of Wisconsin-Superior, where he earned a degree in 1979."

13. IMHO, "alma mater" should only refer to that school/university from which
Edited on Wed Jun-15-05 02:18 PM by TahitiNut
... one matriculates. The Latin term "alma mater" (which means "nourishing mother") contains the same word ("mater") that's the root for matriculate.

We only have one mother ... even if we're wet-nursed by Boobs'R'Us. :silly:
